know of any cheap remote oile thermostats out on the market? that is the only thing missing from my kit.
Hey guys, just new to this forum and i realised i need rep to sell some of my 4AGE parts. So, just thought i would share with you a cheap oil cooler setup. I thought this might be interesting to some out there considering oil coolers can sell for a preposterous amount and are basically a very simple thing.
Go to a wreckers and ask for a EDIT- [(as Takai has suggested) - Aussie Pajero, Patrol, Rodeo etc oil cooler. Most of them have oil and trans coolers fitted stock, especially if they are from the NT]. Should be under $50. Try to get one with barbed ends already on it to save spending money on fittings from Pirtek etc.
Buy yourself a Permacool remote oil filter mount kit. These retail for about $80.
Find some suitable pressure capable hose and heavy duty clamps. $40.
Now, the Permacool oil sender fitment attaches to the block in place of your oil filter. You can then run the OUT line of this up to your remote mount with filter and then down through the oil cooler (which you will have to custom mount with some small aluminium brakets or similar) and then back into the IN line on the Permacool sender.
Works a treat and pretty cheap i reckon.![]()

While the Magna trans coolers are pretty cheap, they get clogged up easily, mainly because they are made for a thinner oil than the engine oil which you would have running through them.

in all these years and all these engines i have never used a therostaic oil cooler setup! they are not used on race engine they are not used on most performance aftermarket engines! they are just another piece that can stuff up! you either warm you engine up and use the right oil or dont bother having a good engine! there a second rate product used by DYI guys that dont know what they are doing.Originally Posted by -==L=a=N=c=E==-
save your money and do it right.
god right up but a good aftermarket cooler is better than most stock coolers! the ony good stock cooler i have ever come across is the big RX7 ones! which work well with the permacooler setup!
kingmick: but what if the car is a daily driver, wouldn't the oil at cruise cool down to ambient? surely cold oil ain't exactly a good thing?

Ahh i never thought too much about that. I do filter the oil before the cooler though.Originally Posted by takai

also you can have a pressure drop when using it as a full flow cooler.
No worries. Cheers for the input. I shall update the post with the alternative oil coolers that people can use.
I'm with lance, and wondered the samething. (i figured you'd wan't some way to stabilize the oil temprature.Originally Posted by -==L=a=N=c=E==-
