Hi Pearce, Is this some kind of horrible end of 2006 JOKE?????? maybe not? You must have a bloody good reason for such a STRANGE request???care to share it? crownman 0412 711 481.
Has anyone got information on (how to / parts needed) to change G series diff from 5 stud to 4 stud...
???

get axle spun down and re studded to suit
on the ke70 we used s13 front disc's with fd rear calipers and custom brackets (i have the program for the cnc for these) and then get some cables made up
and away you go we have also done this for rx2 and series one 7
im having a guess here and thinking this might be for a sprinter that keeps smashing 'T'series diffs. I am doing this same conversion on my sprinter in the future, its not a real straight forward swap, may require the housing too be shortened, but like it has been said, re-drilling the axles for 4 stud is easy. still have other issues to deal with like spring mounts and trailing arm brackets. alot of stuffing about but will be worthwhile as you will never break one in such a light car.Originally Posted by crownman

it sounds like i will have to live with 5 stud... would be great to find out about the skyline gear
The old school way:
1. Bung up four of the five holes
2. Drill three new ones.
The damned expensive way:
1. Toss out five stud axles
2. Get new axles made with however many studholes you like..
The smart way:
1. Leave rear end five stud
2. Make front end five stud to match.
The smart way indeed..
Zoom has just done a hilux into sprinter(at least I think it was sprinter) conversion in their latest mag. Atleast it has the hilux rear end that you need.
For those using the G-series diff in ae71 / ae86;
Did you keep / were you able to keep the same suspension?
If anyone upgraded to coilover I would be very appreciative to hear your opinions.
Keeping the same suspension is not a problem as the diff jig should also incorporate moving the spring seats/panhard/shock mounts. My particular setup required moving the shock mount slightly inboard as it interferes with the r31 brake caliper but it's not hard to do.
If you're planning on using coilovers on the rear, it's still probably a good idea to weld the spring seats in place as they dont interfere with anything and it at least gives you the option to use the standard setup.

Thanks eddie,
what did you use for your disc conversion ?
Is there any way to convert to disc but keep 5x114.3 ???
people have been saying r31 / r32 stuff.. do they all get re-drilled to 4x114.3 ?
Pearce,
Check the info in my TA22 thread (link in Sig) Its common practice to convert them from 5 to 4 but you may want to check with your engineer if its for a street car.

damn, looks like im sticking with drums for now.... more researching to be done.
Rod's setup looks almost identical to the way i built the one i have. You can see how the shock mount has been moved inwards to clear the caliper.
If you were planning on converting to disks but keep the 5 stud, it would probably be a better idea to find a doner that has the 5x114.3 pattern to begin with. Both mine and Rod's use r31 skyline calipers and disks which come with 4 stud from the factory.
Gianttomato has a disk setup for a G-series that suits 5 stud i believe. His one runs an internal drum setup rather than the integral handbrake the R31 uses.
They way i've figured to make rear brake conversions work is to:
1. Choose the type of handbrake you want to use, internal drum/integral caliper/hydraulic. Note: Hydraulic handbrakes cannot be engineered for road use. There must also be a mechanical system in place.
2. From the above, choose the caliper you want to use.
3. Find a suitable width disk to fit the caliper
4. Make a caliper adaptor bracket to suit. (i always put this one last because either way, an adaptor bracket has to be fabricated so it can be modified to suit the above)
Obviously some consideration should be made so that the adaptor bracket isnt massively offset from the housing but the nice thing about G-series diffs is that the bracket can go on either side of the housing which makes disk choice much widerAlso dont forget the disk should be hubcentric so sometimes a locating ring must be made or the disk centrebore widened.
