Default 18RG fuel pump choice? Help please...

    Hey guys,

Im building a RG and im planing on running 45mm webers and im just wondering if the mechanical fuel pumps are fine to use or if id be better off running an electrical one? I read in another thread that with webers, using a electric fuel pump that delivers 4psi means i would not need a regulator. Is that correct? Also what sort of advantages would i get with an electric one? Better response? Any help would be great guys...

    Thanks. Craig...

hey i also have twin weber 45 dcoe's, had an old electric pump setup on there that went fine but did quite a bit of research and found out an awesome electric pump setup that i will be using soon:

use a electric carter rotary pump 4070:

    rotary pump
    self priming
    low pressure 4-6 psi
    high volume
    no pulsating like other pumps
    no return needed
    no regulator needed
its on the cheaper side at about $140
    comes with mounting kit
    med noise factor
    great flow rate

this pump is recommended by one of the biggest weber distrubutors for most of the weber carburettors they sell.
    here is their site :

the facet brand pumps are common on carbies but have have had bad reviews if you were considering one of them.

Mechanical fuel pumps shit me, especially when they're old and start to become troublesome. If you're upgrading your engine (which is obviously the case with 45mm Webers) you really should go for an electric pump - then you know it will always deliver the required amount of fuel, and there's no diaphragm to crack and dump fuel into your sump!

Cool. Thanks ill be going electric for sure then...

What do i do about the mechanical fuel pump thats on the engine? Do i take it off and block off where it was? Or will it just do nothing if its not hooked up?

The 18R-GEU had a blanking plate there, so either get one of them or make your own.

Are you going to be using a regulator? I though 4 psi was max suposed to be used for carbies. But im no mechanic...

Thanks Norbie. I dont know how my chances are of finding a 18rgeu backing plate so i rekon ill end up making one. It shouldnt be to hard i hope...

    Oh ok cool...

I went to repco, autobarn and supercheap today and none of them could get that carter pump for me. Down here in tassie were a bit limited on places to go. Im going to see if my engine builder can find one for me. If he cant any chance someone could help me out?
