Default Legalities of coil-over spring kits

I've done a search but didn't find an answer to my question which is:-

"Are coil-over spring kits legal for Australian/Victorian roads?"

I mean these (and yes I know they're not for a Toyota and they're from e-bay but I may be able to get a cheap set of spare struts to play with for my car)

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....MakeTrack=true

    Should I bother?

i highly doubt that coilovers would be legal/pass an inspection.

i am using them in my car, i too am a bit worried bout it. but then again, i dont have to get my car inspected to get rego.

maybe get car inspected and then fit kit afterwards. i know its not the right thing to do but......there are a lot of things we shouldnt do but we do them!

Yeah I'm not worried about the pits per se, I'm more worried about my insurance policy.

as far as i know they're perfectly legal (at least they are up here in QLD), i know many a car thats passed a rwc having coilovers, as long as they're of a sound construction and the areas u bolt them to (really only matters for live axle rear ends) are capable of holding the weight

if you don't tell your insurance company, they can use them as an excuse to not cover you in the event of an accident... or so they will say.

By coilover i assume you mean height adjustable? On principle, a stock front strut is also a coilover.

It's better to tell them. That way you don't have to have a shitfight with them about it when you're also stressed about losing your car, damage, etc.

Just on that particular ebay sale, i wouldn't get them. I dont ever buy anything off ebay if there are grammer/spelling mistakes on the write up. I see itthis way; if they dont have time to write up 1 page about the item and check it over, then they are probably dodge and dont know what the hell they are on about.

when i sell things on ebay, i make sure the add is perfect.

    just my two cents

What oldcorrola says. In my experience with insurance that covers modified cars, they are happy if you inform them of all mods, and all mods are legal. By "legal", I guess ok with relevant RTA.

    ask your insurance company.

the most important thing, ill put it in bold for you....

get a letter from them, saying they're fine with it, IN WRITING! so you actually have proof that they said it was ok

of course, if they say no, you dont put them in, because if you put them in, whats the bloody point of getting insurance?

    Hi,

What insurance companies decide is their business. If your modifications are legal in terms of ADRs, RTA or otherwise then the insurance company is not obliged to maintain your policy when you tell them about the mods - they may say it is outside their policy and hence you need another insurer. Or they will re-negotiate your premium, you will pay more.

However as OldC has said you do need to tell them as they do like to use non-disclosure as an exit.

As far as technical legalities, my current Engineering Cert states..........struts have been modified by fitting of adjustable spring seats and smaller diameter coil springs......amongst other things.

As far as I and now the RTA is concerned - their legal.

On another point a friend of mine bought some identical to those in the link you posted for a sprinter the only difference being his were blue. Imo the quality of them was a bit meh but i guess you get what you pay for. Better than king springs.

What exactly is wrong with King Spring coilover springs?

I would choose them over unbranded springs off an ebay ad written in caps with spelling mistakes and that doesn't specify spring rates

Yeah, that kit looks the dodge alright...

Dont forget that the stainless sleeves are going to be a PITA to weld to your mild steel struts, and will cause the struts to rust quickly. better off with mild steel sleeves. Also, their 0-100mm adjustability statement stinks.

As for your insurance, i must re-iterate what others have said... tell them before you do it and get it in writing
