Default CEL on sometimes on 2005 corolla hatch made in district 9 and techstream

Hi guys, I own a (wrong wheel drive) toyota again and the check engine light comes on and stays on when I start the car roughly half of the time.

I don't think anything superbad is going on but want to fix it, my cheap ebay bluetooth OBD2 reader won't tell me anything as I think this model isn't normal OBD2. (??)

Anyone savvy on techstream? was going to buy one on ebay but it looks like there are lots of different versions (IM, GA, GU, JK, P5, BU etc)

    which one do I need?

    cheers

2006 I believe is the year that OBDII compliance became 100% implemented in Aus, some manufacturers had it before then but not consistently (you also need to be careful when searching/buying online as a lot of places assume that the US changeover date of 1996 is the same around the world). Also, Toyota had a habit of using an OBDII connector but with different wiring/software prior to this date. In the case of the ZZE Corolla it also compounds when you factor in whether it came from Japan or Suth Effrica.

EDIT: This thread might contain some useful info

What about counting the flashes from the check engine light? I have wired in a switch to make it easier. I also use a Creader VI+ JOBD reader on my JDM motor . Works for me

cheers, mine is south african (hence the district 9 reference) which will come in to it, no idea how. I think the 2ZZ cars are a different kettle of fish altogether. I could take it to a dealer but I would be better off financially just buying a bunch of readers than paying for an hour of labour.

It doesn't flash, unless there is a diagnostic jumper I can short somewhere?

Put a jumper across TC and E1 or pins 4 and 13 on the 16 pin connector

Thanks guys, searched play store for "toyota OBD2" and downloaded a free app called "ELMScan Toyota" after a tiny bit of bluetooth nonsense it connected, and had one DTC: P1035 - Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) 1, bank 1, heater control – circuit malfunction

guessing the most likely cause of this is the O2 sensor is borked, might look at where it is, how much they are and replace it one day, but it's a failure I'm not too worried about. might explain why some of the old sparkplugs were quite sooty??

How's your fuel consumption? Sooty plugs and borked O2 sensor means you should be running much richer than normal, enough to easily see at the bowser

haven't owned the car for long enough to know, pretty simple to check if the sensor or circuit is faulty, will have a look one day.
