3sgte starter/flywheel onto 3sge

Hey guys

The previous owner of my 1987 Celica ST162 SX swapped in the gearbox from the ST 3sfe variant (s54 box i believe?). So the car currently has a gen1 3sge with the 3sfe gearbox/starter/flywheel on it. 5th gear constantly pops out so I decided to replace the gearbox with the original 3sge box. I've since acquired one of from a local wrecker but he didn't have the flywheel and starter to match.

Now i just need to get the starter motor/flywheel combo to bolt up so I can do the swap. My question: Does the 3sgte starter/flywheel work on the 3sge? The wrecker has these parts, and theyre gen2 from an MR2 i believe.

If not, which starter/flywheel (besides a 3sge flywheel/starter) would work?

No, the st162 3sge gearbox places the starter under the exh manifold. All subsequent 3sge (s54) gearboxes had the starter on the gearbox side like your 3sfe gearbox.

The gen1 3sge/gearbox combo is pretty much in its own little world unfotunately.

It ended up that I couldn't find a starter/flywheel anywhere to suit the 3sge box i bought, so i ended up just getting a SV21 Camry (3sfe) s54 gearbox from wrecker last week for $250. And new clutch on order as well. The longer ratios suit me anyway because most of the driving in the celica is up and down Kwinana fwy haha

What clutch did you get? Sorry i shouldve mentioned it in my first response but it clean slipped my mind.

I just ordered a Exedy oem replacement online. Is your s54 the 3sge type or 3sfe?

Its a 5sfe type from an st204
