its difficult, but I use the holding tool on the edge of the bucket closest to the journal, this allows enough room to get the shim out.
First time I've done this with cams in-situ. . .
I bought the correct tool (copy of Toyota / Lexus OEM) but cannot remove shim as the hold-down tool itself stops shim coming out.
Releasing & grabbing the shim from the follower is not the problem - the issue I have is that there's just not enough clearance between the head casting (under the cam bearing cap) and the hold down tool for the shim to move through - it's simply too narrow.
I really DON'T want to remove the camshaft but can't see how to avoid this unless I can work out how to hold the follower down at the back/outer side of the camshaft.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? < refer photo below >

Information is POWER... learn the facts!!
Thanks OST; logic told me that applying the tool on the back / journal side was the only way it might work but as you said - it's bloody difficult - very little room to gain a purchase.
Nevertheless I'll give it a shot - if that doesn't work I will loosen the bearing caps (but keep the belt on) & hopefully that will give me some extra room.
