is it a T or S series ? what size axle and splines ?
Hi I've read about AE86 & AE95 rear axle similarities ..the differences being AE95 uses drum brakes, a 4 x 100 stud pattern and different ratios.
I don't know much about diff's/rear axles...
Is it possible to fit an lsd into AE95 housing or would entire axle require further mods or complete swap?
thanks

i dont have a funny or cool signature.
Hi fixer' thanks for replying...
Here's all the websearch info I can find:
T series 10 bolt housing like the AE86's.
More info here
Club4AG Forum Topics: AE95 4wd Reference guide.
2.929:1 diff - ratio
Diff flange is same
Splines are the same as Kouki T series.
More info here:
AE95 rear diff
Uses the same wheel bearings as the S series AE86 diff.
"......some tarago axles to suit the unique AE95/Kouki axle spline. These were going into a LSD diff which we narrowed for a KE Corolla.
The front diff in the early 4WD lite-ace also uses that spline...."
Here's some more info courtesy of:
Axle List
Axle List
Model Axle Type Diff Details Stud Pattern Width Brakes
Corolla AE86 Solid Axle (coils) S312: 6.4", 3.90:1, 2 pinions, Open
4x114.3 1410mm Drum
Comments: ADM version. The S diff can be identified by 1 long stud at the bottom. A T diff will not fit into this housing.
Solid Axle (coils) T282: 6.7", 4.30:1, 2 pinions, Open
4x114.3 1410mm Solid disc, 1 piston calipers
Comments: JDM version. 85-87 models (kouki) have 1–1.5mm thicker axles than earlier (zenki) T series axles.
AE95 Solid Axle (coils) T462: 6.7", 2.92:1, 2 pinions, Open

TE71 Solid Axle (coils) S312: 6.4", 3.90:1, 2 pinions, Open

That's about all the info I can source for now.
TRD used to make an LSD for the corolla AE95 4wd wagon but it's discontinued ...probably didn't generate enough sales.
I'm hoping to find an LSD diff centre that I can bolt in.

Wow! this is the best toyota axle guide I've come across...
Toyota diffs and wheels
Just found this info also...

ok, an update on the corolla 4wd rear axle in case some one cares.
definitly a late T diff. silly 2.9 ratio though.
the axles are very different
for one they are like 10cm longer! yes cm not mm....
and the bearings are also very different.
and the distance from the brearing face to the flange is different

Be careful changing the rear ratio without changing the front to suit. Your transfer won't like you very much and will protest quite vocally before depositing itself unceremoniously onto the road.....
Yeah Terry from Road & Track North Ipswich, Queensland, said a similar thing to me in a private email.
www.roadandtrack.net.au
"...the gearing is determined by the centre diff. if you change the rear diff ratio it will all turn to shit as it is just the inverse of the centre diff ratio..."
Not sure what he means by 'inverse' - I guess it means the ratios have to be kept the same - Change one and you have to equally change the other...
I've spent all my time so far understanding the 7AGZE build (dowels & oil squirters are getting machined in at the moment - HAPPY MAN!)
I've just started to focus my attention on suspension and rear diff. Don't know sh*t about transfer and centre diff yet. (Will have to set aside some time with the cheif engineer - my old man and take a look at the manual)
Scuse my ignorance for the time being, can some help explain how the transfer/centre diff and rear diff ratios relate to each other?

I get Terry to do all my machine work (my mates use him too) and he knows his stuff. Doesn't mince words which is nice in an industry that has a lot of people talking a lot of rubbish a lot of the time.
I'm not 100% up with 4WD and AWD systems, I'll ask my neighbour who has built a few comp trucks if no-one else chimes in.
is it not as simple as just get a T series limo centre (you can buy them new or used nearly everywhere) and put it into your non limo 2.9 geared centre??
No he doesn't mince his words..The machinist I use down here was the same!
I PM'd OldSkewlToy He's pretty keen on these awd systems and has written about them before...
Rekons MR2/AE92 front will match late AE86 kouki rear ...but the post was from back in 2006 might've just been a guess. i don't know if he owned an AE95 back then.
Emailed toyota re: a 2way lsd TRD make
I didn't realise only the 1.5way is discontinued.
Mattysshop - Sorry, what do you mean by 'limo'

limo = limited slip ??? i guess ?
front and rear diff ratio has to be the same, if not, one will try out turn the other, same goes with different height tyres. = not good for the transfer.
i dont have a funny or cool signature.
lets not mix up diff ratios... and LSD. LSD just locks up paired axles when slip is detected. Cusco still has a listing for the AE95 rear... it is the same as the AE86 LSD.
To change ratios, you will need to find an oddball pairing - a ratio that matches the "E" series gearbox, and the AE86 rear diff

Just wrote a PM to PCW, but just for public consumption:
I've test fitted an AE95 axle into a kouki T series centre and confirmed it fits. Since the AE95 diff is a T series (as far as I know) then I agree with Matty. It could be as simple as buy a kouki (that's the rarer, late, larger axle type) T series LSD centre, install it into your standard diff with standard ratio and standard axles and then do two wheel burnouts... or possibly 3 or 4 wheel.
Hen
I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.
Do you mean? ..for example...
*get a kouki T series LSD-centre 2nd hand from somewhere like.. ebay / yahoo-Japan
* pull apart the AE95 diff
*keep the AE95's 6.7" crown
*match the two together & reinstall
Edit - I've just read that both kouki and AE95 have 25mm O.D. spline size, so I think for under $400 2nd hand delivered it'd be worth a shot.
Will await a few more 'experienced' opinions 1st... Stay posted... If I do go ahead & fail.. there'll be a 2nd hand kouki lsd up for sale

In the end I bought a brand new cusco lsd rear diff... from japan. Was just shy of a thousand dollars...
But it seems, perhaps I didn't need to.
Some months later I came across the cusco catalogue and can confirm what mattyshop, hen and oldskewltoy have said.
http://www.cusco.co.jp/en/catalog/pd...logue_lsd.html
The Cusco LSD's available for both the AE86 and the AE95 share identical part numbers.
At least I'll have the peace of mind that what I'm adding to the wagon is in top notch condition and not second hand thrashed..
They come in 2 types. Type RS and Type MZ. (The Type MZ LSD has a higher initial torque setting than the Type RS)
..more info..
codes are:
Type RS
LSD 131 F (1-way)
LSD 131 L15 (1.5way)
LSD 131 F2 (2 way)
Type MZ
LSD 131 E (1-way)
LSD 131 K15 (1.5-way)
LSD 131 E2 // LSD 131 K2 (both, 2-way)
