Toyota Hiace carby - daily driver choke and AC problems
Hi all,
Can anyone shed some light in regard to my hiace daily driver?
It's a carby 2RZ engine and the Auto choke doesn't work when it's cold.. Is this common and if so, what generally stuffs up first so I can start fault finding with a direction.
Also, when the AC clicks in, there is no idle up. I figure it must have an idle up that's not working as the power steering has a vacuum switch that bumps the idle when it's under load.
Any help would be great. Worst case, I'll install a bleed valve that opens when the AC switch gets switched..
Thanks in advance.

First i would check voltage to electric choke thermostat, unsure of voltage not having a relevant workshop manual. Then with air filter off check by using light finger pressure check choke butterfly is not stuck open.
The air con can't help you with, sorry.

Thanks for the reply mate! I'll certainly check that out tomorrow and go from there. I've read a few things now that make me believe that the auto choke on this model is average at best..

Re: Toyota Hiace carby - daily driver choke and AC problems
If you search elsewhere in this forum you will find I have twice asked about the same/similar problem but never found the solution.
My 2RZ carb Hiace has no power steering and no air con. It lost the auto choke at cold about 15 years ago but it still starts easily with a pump of the accelerator pedal -it is not the choke electric element at fault. Some time after the auto choke stopped a second issue became apparent. If the second carb barrel is opened under load, it dumps the fuel in the fuel bowl and runs constantly rich with a low fuel height. When the engine cools off or is left overnight the engine returns to normal.
I replaced the choke breaker diaphragm (3 screws) as this is said to create similar problems but it didn't fix it. Earlier this year when I had a problem with another carb car I purchased a fuel needle valve from a carburettor store and they said the 2RZ suffers from blocked air bleed drillings around the lower butterfly valve. This makes sense as the 2RZ uses a few vacuum breaker devices and might explain why my fuel level in the float bowl lowers and stays there after loading up the engine. Similarly, the choke butterfly also has a vacuum breaker in its system. It might also explain your A/C idle up problem ie. no or low vacuum in the tubes.
I've purchased a carb kit and will clean the carb when the rain stops (first time since 1992). Buy a spray can of carb cleaner from Repco but get one that has a piece a tube for the nozzle as you need to bend it 90 degrees to face up to the hole drillings.
If you beat me to cleaning the carb please reply on this thread. If it doesn't work it might be electrical as there are electrical boxes elsewhere on the vehicle that control bits of the engine. I think there is one inside the passenger's side b-pillar. They are not computers but might be simple timers or items that rely on voltages from other sensors.

Another member with 2RZ carby issues! At least we can swap notes. How did you go with the cleaning? any chance yet?
I don't have the fuel bowl level issue but I will try blowing those tubes out with an air compressor as well.
Will keep you posted!
