    Default Smart Key

    Hi,

Does anyone know how toyota/lexus smart keys are coded? I bought a second hand 2008 IS250 and the bloke had an imported toyota crown smart key watch that he gave me. lexus in adelaide said they couldnt get it to work, but lets face it, when it come to tech stuff this forums a better source of info.

They said it recognised it but couldnt code it for some reason, anyone have any ideas how I could get this to work?

did they say y they could not get it to work

does the car have an original key and u want to make a spare
or does the car not start and u want to program the other key to the car so it starts

the very late cars are abit harder to make keys for
and toyota dealers are pretty useless when it comes to keys
they will normally sell u a new ecu and or new immobiliser
which comes in virgin state and ready to accept the next key inserted into the ignition switch

u can program new keys into toyotas easily but im pretty sure u need two working master keys to make a third key

ive recently been researching and getting into key copying and coding
and toyotas are a big pain in the ass
there are some devices out there that might work but they are all a big might
as its all a big hit n miss and trial and error unles su have done these many times

if u send car over to us i could try some different things and learn hehehehe

or find someone local that is a good automotive locksmith
they might charge a couple hundred bucks to do it as its much chepaer than a 2000 dollar ecu

No they didnt say why and they were pretty vague on how it recognised it but wouldnt actually work and to be honest I wasn't really impressed with their explanation

I have the two original keys for the car and want to make the watch work as well. I was thinking that maybe the ecu only accepts 2 keys and thats why the watch wouldn't work.

I reckon they just stick to a manual and if its outside whats written down they throw their hands up and say to hard

I have seen those key makers on ebay but the english is a little sketchy and I would hate to somehow F*&K the ECU on the car.

    Hi,

A couple of things with Smart Keys :

1/. If key ( Watch) is already coded to another car only a new ECU will work.
2/. The Chinese Recoders will work on early cars but Toyota is about to close the door that allows them to work.
3/. The Chinese Recoder may work for what you want as they can recode the ECU back into Delivery mode -
4/. Try a lockSmith as they use the Recoders.
5/. Did read somewhere that these Watches only work on Crown.

I think the recoder will be a last resort, sounds expensive if anything goes wrong

I'll ring some locksmiths and see what they say, does anyone know a good one in Adelaide?

It was made by citizen and sold as a genuine toyota accesory for the crown, I assume toyota/lexus smartkey tech isnt too dissimilar from model to model

Unfortunately the locksmith could not make the dream come true

He said the watch doesn't emit anything, possibilities are:

    1. Broken
    2. Different frequency that is out of the car, and his scanners, range

    :-(

Once a smart key is programmed to an ecu it cannot be programmed again.
Ive had many a disappointed customer when you tell them their 2nd hand key they bought off ebay is a paperweight.

    Hi,

A Smart key can be reprogrammed but to do so you must replace the certification ECU which then rewrites a new vehicle code to both the key and the ID Code box.
The key will then no longer work with the original vehicle.

Its a pretty expensive way to go though !

Locksmiths can usually program additional keys, but i haven't seen many with the ability to perform an immobilizer reset. Your ECU needs to be reflashed to accept new keys. Expect about 1-1.5 hours of labor to perform this at a dealer. Stop wasting your time, and just take it into the dealer. I'm sure you've already wasted money on the locksmith. You own a Lexus.. don't be cheap and try to cut corners.
