correct.^^ unless confident with soldering. just go with crimps and glue shrink. get your self some good crimps and joiners and theres no problems.

I twist the wires together for mechanical strength, then solder them.
I normally use heat shrink, but if I have to use electrical tape instead (due to forgetting to slide the heat shrink on first, or running out of it) then sometimes I will put a small cable tie around it so I know that the electrical tape won't peel off over time.
As mentioned by others, if the wire has enough slack to not be in tension, but also has enough support to not move around too much, then you should have no problems.
I've been using the twist-and-solder method for many years with no problems at all.
I also don't like how chunky a crimp connection tends to be.
For a race car, especially an endurance one, then high quality crimp connections would definitely be the way to go though.
