Default Hand brake / drum brake play...

    Hi all,

So the rear right wheel has some play in it when the hand brake is applied.
With it applied, the wheel can still rotate maybe 45deg before it stops.

This doesnt happen at all with the rear left wheel, its locked solid as it should be.

I took the rotor/drum off the hub, but couldn't see any obvious issues.
I dont have much experience dealing with drum brakes though, so could have easily missed something.

Is there a common cause for this problem?
What should i be looking for?

    Thanks!

if there is a spot you can apply the brake and it doesn't turn, then warped drum. or perhaps not quite centred properly.
try rotating the drum on the axle thru 90 or 180deg and see if it changes...

see if it is binding at a particular point (with hand brake lightly applied.. ie so when the smaller diameter passes the part of brake pad pushed furthest out), or if it is always a 45deg movement before stopping

I exaggerated the angle slightly (has been a few weeks since i looked at it)... its more like 10deg.
Its definitely the shoes moving inside. Maybe ive stressed them a bit, which has given them some free play until stopping up against the end pin.
    The handbrake works fine otherwise.

Im trying to track down a loud knock that happens on the rear right occasionally.
Suspension bushes, etc are all in good shape, so brakes were the next thing to check which is when i came across this.
I think i'll keep looking. Diff maybe.

I've had the brake shoe locating pins snap before too... allows the shoes to rotate a bit even when squished firmly against the drums...
