Default 1jz front crank cover, removal?

    Hey guys,

Got a bit of an oil leak from the big cover that goes behind the crank timing pulley, i've undone all the bolts between the cover and the block/sump and broken the sealant. The cover moves forward about 5mm but then has a metallic clunking noise as i try to jiiggle it off Is there something im forgetting? Is it a necessity to destroy the front main seal to get it off?
All i want to do is clean it up so i can re silicon it!!!

    Cheers,

    Troy

    hey mate,
that front cover is the oil pump. it should just gently tap off. make sure you have removed the pulley that the timing belt runs on first. you need make up a puller to do this. there is also two orings in there for the oil pump suction and pressure ports. you should replace these with new factory toyota orings as they are very important! the toyota manual also recomends that the sump should also be taken off to do this job.

thanks buddy, its a right bastard to get off, we tried levering it off to no evail, didnt want to snap the thin looking casting. How would you go about tapping it when you cant get a hammer behind it?

Perhaps i should bite the bullet and take the engine out and remove the sump, that way i can properly block off all the old twin turbo water lines etc, and make me some solid engine mounts at the same time

Engine is hanging on the engine crane as we speak. Snapped an engine mount as per usual also....lucky i had solid engine mounts on my list haha.

All i need to do tomorrow is move my escort forward, which is also in the process of en angine swap, so that i can move the 1jz forward as it swings out.

don't know if this helps, all just kind of came off for me.
i do remember there was a small keyed metal tooth thingy behind the crank pulley, but i think it just fell off and wasn't really secured as such
