    Default Half cage design

Hey folks, lets talk half-cage design.
Im looking at putting a half cage into the Mirage. Getting one of the local guys, Grumpy auto to chuck it in and it will be built to CAMS spec.
Not looking for anything over the top but there are so many options as far as how many points i put in and what are the pros/cons/necessary/over the top.
I was thinking main hoop with a cross, rear stays to the shock tower, single diagonal and a cross bar between the two (harness bar).

Would 2 basic side intrusions coming from midway up the main hoop to the footwells be worth doing? Should i have a cross in the rear stays instead of a single diagonal? Would 1 diagonal a a horizontal bar in the main hoop be better?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

I assume this it to be a road legal cage? vic roads has a self certification document for roll cages in road cars - (No.27 I think it is - download it from their web site) however their design leaves a lot to be desired - ie side intrusion bar has to be no higher than side of seat (thus in a side impact it directs a car up & into your torso - not a good look!)

If it is for track only, why only a half cage?

From a safety perspective, a half cage doesn't quite protect the driver/passenger as much, and there is also the gain in rigidity from doing a full cage.

Hi StuC. Link to CAMS attached. Look at General Requirements, on leftside menu, then look at safety cage structure.

I am a CAMS Scrutineer, if you get stuck message with questions. If I can't answer I can check with higher graded people for advice. A lot depends on your main category of use of vehicle.

Roundy - I hadn't even thought of a full cage to be honest. I figured i honestly wouldnt be going hard enough or in full-on competition enough to warrant it. A whole 1.5l 66kW of fury probably cant get me in to too much trouble, but can see the upside. If things get more serious i won't be running this car anyway and will step into something else

ToyTA22 - i have the requirements here and had a proper read through it today.

Think i'll go main hoop with double diagonal, rear stays with single diagonal and harness bar.

a half cage's sole purpose is to stop the roof collapsing in the event of you rolling it .all you need is a basic hoop, with a diagonal (top driver's side to bottom passenger side), and two rear legs backwards, with a harness bar. any more is just weight for no real advantage. however, if you're going to run with passengers frequently, then you may consider a double diagonal in the main hoop.
