From memory my 185 shafts popped straight into the 205 box....no wizardry required at all?
G'day all,
Searched the forums and couldn't find any threads about this so I am asking here.
I recently purchased a ST205 GT4 half cut and have been in the process of removing the engine and gearbox out of that to put into my ST185 GT4.
Apparently the front drive shafts are different:
ST185 drive shafts bolt onto a flange coming out of the gearbox.
ST205 drive shafts magically pop in and out using some form of magic.
Whats more...
ST185 front drive shafts are 405.4mm and front track is 1475mm
ST205 front drive shafts are 357.7mm and front track is 1510mm
Not quite sure why this is...I thought both cars had the same gearbox. Is the ST205 box much wider? Or is this due to rim offset?
Finally, can anyone please recommend what I should do if I wish to keep the stock ST185 suspension setup rather than switch to the super strut from ST205.
If possible, I'd prefer to keep the 205 engine and gearbox together...just to make things easier.
The 205 drive shafts also have the ridges for ABS speed sensor and my 185 ones don't.
Thanks for any help that can be provided!
Dan

Oh..okay. Did you have ABS on your 185? I'm trying to figure out what to do with the big flange on the end of the 185 shafts that bolt onto the bit coming out of the gearbox.
Or does this bit from the 185 gearbox also pop out?
Thanks,
Dan
Yeah my 185 had ABS. For both boxes the driveshafts just pop out with only a C clip holding them in. A quick tap did it pretty easily most times. Seeing you should just be using your 185 shafts you won't have a drama?

Ok I put a 205 motor and gbox in a 185 and ran the 205 ecu.
Mine is non abs and the st185 shafts slide right in.
The extra width is all in the suspension.
Use 185 engine mounts. Cut the st205 throttle cable mount and use the 185 cable.
Everything else is the same
Except electronics. That's a whole different story.

Would love to hear more about your project aus jd. Do you have a write up of it somewhere?
