Look under the valve cover, if its clean, buy it.
If its sludged up to all fuck your going to have problems, so either walk away or buy it cheap enough with the intention of a refresh before it needs a rebuild.
Hey Guys and Girls,
I'm keen on an ae111 which has the 4age BT with 250,000 kms.
What are things that I should look out for with a motor with this many km's.
It has partial service history if that makes any difference.
I know im going to have to factor in a rebuild sooner or later, does anyone have a rough idea on what that would cost?
I guess i could find something with lesser kms but there's not many 97 model bzg's around, plenty more bzr's though.
TIA.

Valve steam seals, VVT gear, cambelt
I would do a compression test as well
The gearbox I would check for issues with the 2nd gear syncro
Umm Wheel bearings and suspension bushings/struts tend to go every 100-125000k so they may be due a change as well
The caps in the ecu can be an issue but if its last that long they should be fine
Bearings if its been thrashed
work out what you are happy to pay for it. then subtract 2k for the inevitable engine rebuild. this is what you should be paying
the BT20v is a great motor, but they have a lot of different parts that fuck out over time (as mentioned above) so it would be prudent to assume that you're going to need to do a refresh on it at some stage. All you can do is mitigate risk. If it isnt full of sludge, isnt blowing smoke, and doesnt sound like a diesel then it should be in fairly good shape
bt 20v in my experience needs a rebuild after 200,000kms
Thanks guys for all the help, seller seems genuine and car checks out ok too from what he has shown me. Now to make my offer and factor in a rebuild later down the track.
Just watch out for that Corolla spares guy from Merrylands. Stores all his bits out in the weather
