Default 1jz breaking down after gapping plugs

    hey

    i have a 1jz (jzx90) non vvti in an mx83 with a w58
been running ok just fixed a busted uni joint.

when i start it in the morning it coughs and splutters a bit. so i went down to fours and more today and got a quote on wacking it on the dyno and getting a basic tine and sus on it

he recommended i pull my plugs check them and gap them to .07mm and re install. im running copper type plugs that are only 6 months old.

so i came home pulled the plugs gapped them correctly and re installed.
in this process i also broke one of the connections.
i don't run the plastic clip ons and they all got brittle a long time ago and broke. so i have just have the metal slip on blade bits ( real pain in the ass)

i soldered the wire and connection back on and fitted it all up

it then ran like shit! missing and carrying on.
i then pulled all the plugs re checked them and they were fine.
i then went and grabbed some of my spare coil packs and changed 1 at a time to see if i could sus the issue. (no change)
i then pulled the plugs back out and re gaped them back to .09mm which they were at before i screwed with them (no change)
then i checked all my connections held the engine at about 2500rpm on the miss and disconnected each coil pack. no real change it appears to be going across them all.

im thinking i could have a crook ignitor. although im confused how this would all of a sudden go and play up as all i have changed is the plug gap?

also where can i get new coil pack connections!! these exposed connections are dodge as and giving me the shits hard!

    cheers jake

if anyone in adelaide is kind enough to come arounmd and let me use their ignitor tomorrow night that would be amazing! although ill prob just have to buy one and test it...

theres heaps of places to get new plugs, ebay is a good start.

if your engine light on? have you checked the polarity of the coils? will it rev past 3k? what ecu are you running?

what plugs are you using? i have always used BKR6E's in non vvti 1j's.

If it only went really bad after re-gapping the plugs I would throw another set of plugs in it as you might have cracked the insulators ? & with your clips on the coil packs are they insulated from each other, I have done a similar thing but also put heat shrink tubing on the end of the bare connectors too so they don't touch against each other & as mentioned check the coil polarity ..

0.07mm and 0.09mm is paper thin for a spark plug gap.

    MSD recommend:
    Up to 10.5:1: - 0.050 to 0.060 inch.
    10.5:1 - 13.0:1:- 0.040 to 0.050 inch
    Above 13.0:1: - 0.035 to 0.045 inch
    deepdishfactory
2T-G - Half the valves but twice the fun.

Funny it didn't even look closely at the figure as to where the decimal point was, I read it as .7mm gap & I'm sure he would have meant to type .7mm, as .07mm is nearly NON existent for a plug gap as its only around .003" thou !!!

If he hasn't got a MSD ignition system around .7 to .9mm is about right ..
