most if not all hilux's have rear drums. i dunno about the new new ones. but i thought they were all rear drum.
people use a70 rear brake setup on hilux diffs. but i dunno how much work it would take to adapt that to a r31 diff.
Hey,
I'm converting my Ta22 to have an r31 diff and deciding on brakes. I know they came with good brakes but my friend managed to avoid doing a brakes test when getting his car engineered because he had all the brakes off a heavier/more powerful car. I've got hilux brakes up front so if I have them on the rear I would hopefully be able to avoid it as well.
So does anyone know if a hilux rear disk brake setup will bolt up to an R31 diff?

i dont have a funny or cool signature.
Ahh right. That's not going to work as I'd prefer to do the brake test and have disks than have drums. Especially if getting the drums to work is going to be a pain.
If you're running a BW diff (I'm guessing its an aus R31 diff), you'll have to get the axles re-drilled.
Or get a set of falcon axles and have them machined to the right length, either way falcon caliper brackets bolt on, use Ea-Ed calipers and rotor. Ea calipers run an integrated handbrake.
Why use falcon stuff? Same PCD as hilux

I was under the impression that a R31 was a four stud in the same spacing as the TA22??
That was quite a large part of why I wanted one.
What is a PCD? (Pot caliper dimensions?)
PCD stands for "Pitch Circle Diameter", so basically its the measurement from the middle of a Wheel Stud to the directly opposite wheel stud ( in a 4 stud application ) & again measured to the middle of the other Stud ..
What's been done to your TA22 ?? to require the Brake upgrade & what size tyres are you running ( front & rear ) ...
Often rear brake upgrades are fairly minimal & as in your case its a lightish car so you don't want anything to Big or you are just going to have to run a pressure limiting device to drop the rear brake pressure & then in my eyes its been a waste really ..
By the way rear Hilux brakes are pretty huge to account for the load they can carry & locking rear brakes on a unloaded Hilux is very common & can be a pain & not what you want for a Brake test ..
Sorry Ashh, was under the impression you were also doing a 5 stud conversion.
Wont the R31 rear brakes be sufficient?
Lexmaz is right, lux drums do lockup unloaded, they also have a load proportion valve at the rear to try and get rid of it.
If you really want discs, still run the EA falcon brakes, buy blank falcon discs (RDA and DBA can do them IIRC) and have them drilled to suit the skyline hub.

Ahh interesting. It wasn't really about braking power, I was just trying to skirt the brake test on engineering. It sounds like doing that could be an effort/quite dangerous so I think I'll just stick to the R31 rears.
You're going to need a brake test at blueslip anyway, so you're not avoiding it, just delaying the inevitable.
R31 brakes would be sufficient. Just refurbish them.
R31 is a heavier car I'm sure, so in itself is an upgrade of sorts
