    Cheers for the responses guys.
I don't doubt cast iron would be fine - it was more that I wasn't sure how much I trusted a lightened version. The reason I need a new one is I've got a 3tgte clutch now so my 2T flywheel isn't going to work with that.

Shakotan - what sort of numbers did it cost you to get the flywheel if you don't mind me asking?

also ASH i used the 1g clutch setup on my 3tgte flywheel. its abit lighter than the 3tc and stock 3tg from memory so that might be you easy option. i think i might have a spare or two around also

I have a light after market 3tgte flywheel in the garage that I don't need if you are interested. About 4.5kg from bathroom scales. Has surface rust and one dowel pin missing. May need a skim on the friction face as it is used.

BTW there is/was a 1ggte bellhousing on gumtree the other day for $100 for those interested.

    Cheers guys,

I've got a 3TGTE clutch already, I've PM'd you about the flywheel stidnam.

As for the bellhousing problem I've bought an adapter off a 3TCgarage bloke. Fingers crossed it fits.

So what is the deal with the difference of the 3TG bell housing, is it the large or small starter port, does anyone have any pictures. Would the early style T-50 transmission bell housing fit since it has the larger starter opening? I guess picture of the difference would help a lot.

73GTV, a 3TG bell housing fits a W series gearbox (W55 and up). The starter opening is the same between all T series engines/bell housings, bt the 3TG starter is both slightly bigger and has a heat shield because of the turbo. You can comfortably use a standard T series starter on a 3TG but it will need some protection from the turbo/exhaust.

A T50 complete g/box will mount to a 3TG, but you cannot mount just the bell housing to another gearbox and use that for the 3TG.

Alternatively you can use a G (or is it J series??? cant remember exactly) series bellhouse to mount a W series gearbox to a 3TG, but the issue with the G (maybe J) series is that the clutch slave/fork is on the exhaust side which can lead to fluid boil from the high temps. I have heard of people moving the slave/fork to the other side on a G series bell house but have never seen it myself.

then the last option is adaptor plates like Ashh has bought. again never seen it in the flesh, but the thing that needs to be considered when doing this is that the gearbox is moved backwards by the thickness of the plate. therefore the input shaft is pushed back, gear lever pushed back and output shaft pushed back as well as the clutch slave rod.

    cheers

Thanks a lot, that cleared up all my questions.

1ggte bellhousing will fit the back of a T series motor, a W series gearbox witll bolt to this then.
this is what i use currently.

clutch fork is on the passenger side as noted above and is missing one bolt hole on the rh top of the bellhousing.

ive had a turbo 3tc in my ke20 for years with this setup, i just a heat sheild around my slave. have not had on issue with the setup.

also the J160 6 speed will bolt to a T series motor, i have also ran this before

3tgte clutch will bolt to a Series 1 1G flywheel. and vis verser, i have also done this.

    cheers, dan

The J160 bolted to the 6 cylinder 1G-FE in the Altezza (and possibly other cars depending on part of the world you are in) will bolt to a T series engine, others version of the box will not so be careful which vehicle it comes from.

I ended up getting the same 6061 billet steeel flywheel as Javal got (for 18RG) - but i got mine made with a little more weight around the perimeter as my intention is to do some drag racing and hence need a bit more rotational inertia.
I bought that flywheel as i didnt have a stock flywheel at the time, and it was cheap enough.

The ring gear is simple, if you have a stock flywheel, use a heat gun to heat up the ring gear and you'll be able to pop it off. Then put your new flywheel in the freezer, and the ring gear in the oven, and you'll be able to press on the ring gear to the new flywheel. That's what we did with mine - as i ended up finding a rusted flywheel with a good ring gear to use.
    ...... butt scratcher?!

Back in the 90's, I was in a machinist course and had the luck of having a third generation Machinist instructor, who aided me in lightening three flywheels. The cool part was the grinder assy that attached to the lathe to true the surface.

I never got around to using them since I had a few TRD flywheels from being stationed in Japan. When I can, I'll post a picture of the finished work, but knowing what I know now about needing a splatter shield or shatter shield, these will always be the items that position my cranks in the corner of my storage to keep the cranks off the floor.
