Default 2012 Hiace 1KD-FTV with failed turbo bearings?

This is my work van, just after the 50,000km service, either on the day or day after I start hearing a woo00shing noise from the turbo when under moderate acceleration/load. It will go woooshe-choo woooshe-cho wooooshe-cho. Like a very quiet BOV but you don't have to take your foot off it to get the choo. Doesn't happen when its cold, only when hot. I haven't had a noticeable drop in power (might be a little bit). But you can defiantly hear what sounds to me like leaking boost.

Take it to get serviced on Friday to get the 60,000km service done (runs fine, just the noise) and ask the Toyota guys to check it out. FYI I don't have much confidence in them, not once have they ever rotated my tyres and even refused to when I asked them do it, so who knows what else they haven't done. And the guy behind the desk said my turbo is busted. I ask, what part? And he ums and ahs and says I think its the bearings. I'm like right... They want to replace the whole turbo. They have a turbo but need gaskets so it'll be at least a month away before that happens they say.

I extremely doubt its the bearings. After only 50,000kms, and because of the noises do not correspond to bung bearings to me. There would be a constant wheering noise under load i'd imagine. I think the mechanics couldn't figure it out/couldn't care and just want to throw a new turbo at it. Plus, by replacing the whole turbo, the dealership probably claims expenses back from Toyota, making the dealership money in the process.

I would like to hook a boost gauge up to it, to see if it is the boost leaking. And I really should buy a good jack/ramps so I can get under the Hiace myself to see if there are any loose hoses/pipes. I don't trust those Toyota mechanics one bit.

So, any thoughts? Or is this a sign I need to start modding again? New bigger turbo, exhaust, chip. More power so I can get to my jobs quicker!!!

If anyone knows of a good place with 1KD experience, i'd love to have them inspect it and see what they think too. In Sydney or Central Coast.

Hey there. Have a look over your intercooler piping. This sounds very much like what happended to my suby a few weeks ago. Split intercooler pipe. Didn't feel like loss of power, but much swooshing, such annoyance.

Make a boost leak tester. Cheap and invaluable tool. 1 air line fitting, some down pipe and an end cap. Plug into air compressor at 10 odd psi. Easy done the leak will squeal hiss leak etc
Heaps of info around the net about them

100% it's the turbo. I've done a few more so on the hilux. Most time the actuator seizes and you loose boost or you get this sound your talking about. Also you can't get parts through toyota to repair the turbo, they are replaced as a complete unit.

If you want pm me and I can arrange a time to look at it for you.

    Cheers Craig
