    Default Heat wrap?

    Hey,

I've got a set of dumps coming and I'm playing with the idea of heat wraping. The benifits are there, faster moving exhaust and lower under bonnet temps. But I'm worried that it might cause the dumps to crack under the extra heat. Any experince?

Also considering wrapping the exhaust mani's at the same time. They are just the stock 1j 'logs' the extra reasponse would be nice but again I've heard horror stories...

So whats peeps XP with heat wrap? Good, bad, otherwise?

I've got it on the extractors on my ZE and it seem sto be working well. I've heard that you only really get cracking issues of you put on more than one layer of tape.

I've read of extractors disintegrating, but that's only under constant race conditions... it was explained that the heat builds up between the extractor and the wrap and melts the metal away...

I don't think it'll be an issue on the street.

I'm considering getting mine coated by HPC, but I don't think it'll be cheap .

Heat wrapping isn't that cheap either unfortunately..

Still cheaper than ceramic coating though.

    Uhuh,

Still weighing up what to do myself... Given that I won't have the std gze extractor heatshield and these 20v ones have been modified to suit 16v and they don't have their heatshield or any of the heatshield mounting brackets on them anymore.

Black heatwrap would be my preference, don't know if the colour makes a difference, but black looks more discreet...

Here's the thermotec product catalogue, no idea if they are any good.

And here's the article I referred to that argues against heatwrap...

hmm, the stuff i bought from autospeed melted in a furnace at about 600deg
they claim 2000F, but i wonder if that is for the thin fibres, or bulk material.
it's unlikely to melt the metal. that would mean around 1300-1500C.. which is very very hot.
there are a couple of reasons for the cracking of exhaust parts under wrap, but...

best idea is to get them ceramic coated. it's not that expensive.. a couple of hundred... better to insulate on the inside of the dump.. than only on the outside

In one of my recent issues of street commodores they got a newe black heat wrap shit advertised, looks abit neater than the normal shit like OC's stuff they claim 2000F rating i think. I'll look it up and post a link to the site.
    If in doubt power out

ARRRH... More money!! I was hoping I'd get a no its all sweet go for it, I dont really have the dollars for a ceramic coating. Just found out on the week end that i have a pin hole in my radiator so its quick fix, replace or upgrade. Every thing but upgrading is dead money in my eyes so I'm up for ~700 for a replacement aluminum one or up to 900! :O

How about the spray can stuff you can get at auto barn ect? I know that it wont help the inside but will it be effective ect?

Dang, the car might be off road a bit longer again...

there's a few discussions about this on the old forum - fwiw, i managed to melt the woven wrap stuff (was > 2 layers thick in parts) and turn it into a fragile, textured glass.

2c: is better to either prevent heat entering the pipe material and/or allow healthly flow of air thru the engine bay (and past the piping) to 'dump' heat while minimising transfer to inlet and other more fragile components.

    cheers,
    Charles.

Just read the conclusion of the article linked above. Even if the can stuff works its not going to help unless i can coat the inside. so i guess any other ideas?

Whats a proper coating worth? Which companies do people recommend?

There is also more than one type of heat proof coating too. . .
There is the shiny aluminised type that costs shitloads, and there is a matt black ceramic type. .
I dont know if there is a huge difference in either price or performance either way, but worth looking around at difference options.

HPC Hipercoat extreme for dump pipe.
$200? 400? they are good with quotes tho, so send them an email.

can stuff will not last or work very well.

for an interim measure, the wrap will work to a degree.. but it is only a last resort for protecting components.. then again...

if their stuff DOES go up to 2000F without either melting or sintering, then it might be ok. you definitely can get matting that works that high as we use it with furnaces up to 1500C or so.

for that pinhole, a bit of quiksteel is your friend.

i have no experience with the heatwrap, and due to recent flames, ill withhold my opinion on it.
