ecu takes its RPM signal from the distributor. if it wasnt working then your engine wouldnt run, so that isnt the issue. more likely is that either the vvt solenoid or the vvt pulley is fucked
Hi Everyone,
I've had my AE111 for about two years now and finally decided to get to the bottom of why my AE111 runs a bit rubbish some days and really well on other days and looked at the VVT side of things thinking maybe it's being temperamental. It seems I have discovered a further issue with the VVT in that it doesn't really work a) as it's supposed to and b) at all.
Issue #1 - Tested solenoid trigger using LED - VVT is triggered on at WOT at all RPMs. It does not disengage throughout the rev range.
It could be ON all the time or OFF all the time. This is hard to determine because of issue #2.
Issue #2 - Unplugging solenoid or having it plugged in results in no changes at idle or whilst driving.
I wonder if the ECU is reading RPM, but then the tacho seems to work just fine so wondering if the tacho reads from the ECU, Cam sensor, CAS or igniter on these motors?
Any thoughts on the subject would be most welcome as I've only started trying to learn about 4AGE's myself as my husband only ever goes on about his Supra and his 2J :|
Kind Regards,
Ashe

Going to replace the pulley and see if that fixes things. I've read that it's highly unlikely that the solenoid on these fail, so fingers crossed.
