Default Clutches, 1ggte, Hilux, Hi-Ace etc etc.

Talk to me about clutches please people, i'm wanting to put a decent clutch in the celica that will last longer than 5mins, and with stand me jumping off it at 7000rpm with the tyres hooking up. This maybe should go into the parts wanted section, but i figured more people look here and it could help some people out possibly.

What i am chasing is a standard 1g pressure plate, which is the same as the below, from what i understand.

    -Hi-Ace 89 model onwards 113r engine.
    -Hi-Lux -LN106
    -LN108
    -LN130
    -LN61

Is there any other models that share the same pressure plate???

It needs to be an original Toyota item, the main recognisable difference between the genuine item and an aftermarket item is how the fingers are attached.

The genuine Toyota item, or the one i'm chasing have the fingers attached via rivets, as in the below pic.

The main ones I'm finding around the place are attached differently as you can see via the pic of the red pressure plate below, which is not what I'm chasing.

The OD on the surface of the pressure plate, where the clutch bites to should be 240mm also.

I know its a tuff ask, as these will be 25 odd years old now and more than like have been replaced well and truly by now, but if you've got one or know of one, let em know as i need one yesterday

Below is a pic of the clutch I've been running for nearly 10 years now, and its just not withstanding the punishment anymore, its perfect for around the streets however doesn't last long racing.

When and if i can find the pressure plate I'm after and get a decent clutch made i will be able to explain how and why I'm doing what I'm doing.

And before you all say just go to a twin plate, or an auto, the simple fact is a don't want to.

    Hi Steve

I agree with you with these clutches and also don't bother with a twin plate as it is not needed for the mighty 1ggte

I use the same style with rivets for the diaphragm however they have been uprated to heavy duty along with a 4 puck brass button disc and with this the car has done several thousand ks over the years and holds up well to it's fair share of abuse.
The clutch also doesn't feel to heavy which is better to use on the road. turbo, ecu, injectors 350+hp.

I doubt the Hiace ones will be much good. The rental Hiaces I used to deal with had no problem getting a bit of a slip up when a clueless renter was trying to get out of the underground carpark. Most of that could have been previous wear but if you drove those vans hard you could smell the clutch, even when there was no weight in the back of the van.

what about one of them fandangled carbon twin/triple plate clutches?

cost the earth but apparently they are just as streetable as "stock" and can take all the punishment of a traditional metal twin plate.

If you want a clutch to handle the hard use you state you want to give it I think a twin plate at least is what you will probably need, assuming you are probably also running some reasonably wide sticky rear tyres too, big difference in what the clutch has to hold if you seriously want to dump it at 7,000 rpm off the line ..

I think the current clutch you have has held up very well. It also depends on condition of your gearbox and what kind your using but I also like the fact that there is some cushioning when launching at high rpm as opposed to double the clamping force/shock on gearbox with the twin plate and also it gets annoying driving with a twin around the streets.

A twin plate clutch is not going to transmit any more drive train shock than a single plate would, the twin plate has a greater surface area to clamp once engaged & so less chance of slippage & hopefully less wear in the long term ..

But I would be using cushioned centres not the solid centre that hypo23 has pictured as cushioned centres are a lot friendlier on the drive train ..

i have the twin plate in mine, at least so i belive and it sure feels/drives like it. id recomend it for sure as a street clutch, there is no loss in drive ability as far as i can tell and depending on the dollars when mine goes ill replace it the same or rebuild it.

Old clutch is out, new one is in.
Clamping force on the old pressure plate has gone from 1640 pounds to the new modified bmw m3 pressure plate is 4600 pounds which is a massive difference.

Flywheel has been redrilled also as the diameter of the new unit is also larger.

Old one used to drive well around the streets and even picked the front wheel at the track, but it didn't like continually being launched at the track as you can see by the discolouration, it would get hot and slip.

Racing at Jambo this weekend will see how the one behaves, and with a bit of luck might even drop 60 footimes by half a sec would be nice, b ut time will tell.

Wow, that's an impressive increase in clamp! What's it like to drive? I assume your clutch guru has some tricks to getting that sort of clamp without making the pedal effort unbearable?

All the best for Jambo man, rip it up!

    Cheers

Defiantly a bit harder in the pedal phil but I've only really had a chance to go for a short drive around the neighbour hood
Had to also lengthen the slave cylinder rod about 15mm to make it all work properly
Jim berry is the man behind the clutch he worked out this recipe a lot of years ago, with the BMW pressure plate etc.
Leave for jamboree tomorrow morning so time will tell I guess
