MAF would appear to be from a JZX100 . Was the original location for the ECU in the engine bay ?

Correct MAF for JZS171 is 22204-46020
I cannot see the ECU in your picture

Sadly most people don't seem to take the time to work out how to properly read the wiring diagrams...

One day I'd like to put a bit of a guide together, if I can find the time and the motorvation

    Cheers

As this is my first experience with a swap I have found it quite a learning experience. Wiring diagrams are key to the process. A guide would be very helpful. I found one website that was helpful with the basics http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h09e.pdf
I will spend some more time studying. I will try to find that MAF locally.
    Thanks,
    Joe

i think i what is wrong with the temp sensor I tied into it with a wire to temp gauge. i will disconnect that. i am going to visit the jdm warehouse where i bought the motor tomorrow. i am hoping the have the right MAF.and maybe even a housing. I spent some time studying the jzs171 wiring diagrams today. i have a better understanding of them now. i cannot find some of the plugs in the pics you sent. would you have anymore of them.
Thanks again for all your help.

DTCs set on THA, THW and MAF at once are strong indication of some fault to pin E2 of ECU (loose connector, broken wire etc etc)

99% of vvti 1j problems are the maf
    one problem is bad wiring
other problem is wrong maf (this is more common than wiring)
ive done heaps of these and half the time the dumbass wreckers don't supply the maf or supply the wrong one

but since u wired the temp gauges to the coolant temp sensor wire I recon u have bad wiring or bad ecu

u can fk around for ages or u can wire up an obd2 plug and put a scanner on it

also when u are always trying to diagnose stuff u should always disconnect ecu for afew minutes then reconnect
and then road test again then check for codes because u are always unplugging sensors when trying to diagnose
and u sometimes get a bum steer on the dtcs

the coolant wire is easiest to check so find the thw wire at ecu and measure it
should be around 4v cold and 1.5 v warm or hot

maf is abit harder to test so I wont go thru it and complicate things for now
