Will a Prius still run with a flat battery?

Will a Prius (in this case we were talking about an NWH11 (01 model) and what would happen if the main battery died (IE the big battery that drives the electric motor, not the cars normal 12 volt battery)..

would that car still start and drive if the big battery failed (IE would not hold a charge/ bacame unservicable)... or would it render the car undrivable?

pretty sure the first gen prius wouldnt run at all if the main battery carked it as i had to diagnose one (press the test button on the main battery) the battery was dead and while the electrics still worked it simply wouldnt turn over.
im sure the same applies to all prius's which is ghey cause it wont go petrol mode untill the battery gets low or you need more powas! but once its dead the system wont switch over to petrol

Car would be defenately be undrivable and need to replace the main battery which from memory is friekin expensive!!! They give a life expectancy of 8 years so you have done well, This is the only down fall to the hybrid cars yes u save on fuel but when the battery dies it ends up being cheaper to buy the petrol overall!

See if it an nhw11 or nhw10 as there is a big difference in battery price.
Nhw10 Jap import is about 8k all up
Nhw11 aus delivered is about 3k all up

They use the main battery to power the electric motor in the box to start the petrol engine so if it was dead it wouldnt start the petrol motor.
You may also be able to break the battery down and find the individual cell that is stuffed and replace that if you know what you are doing.

owch! yeah you dont save much with those plus they generate as much polution making the battery as a straight petrol car anyway.
its more like a car for people who want to appear to be doing a good thing for the planet while paying more and looking like a nong doing it

Hi,

Leave the car overnight and the HV Battery may recover some charge ( Battery voltage is a calculated figure based on Temp/Current in out/and a few others.)
1 2volt Auxilliary battery powers up ECU and System Main relays and needs to be good.
Make sure nobody has unplugged Service plug from HV battery.

Battery Warranty is 8 Years and Battery life is expected to be greater than that, but if someone leaves it in Neutral not Park it will run BOTH Batteries down !

Used to get my mate to roll start me over speed humps on conventional otto cycle 4 stroke, it worked.
Not sure on rechargeable battery woofterness to be honest.

The car definitely won't do anything once the main battery goes dead. I remember years back we sent a pack out of an NHW10 to New Zealand for refurbishment. I cannot remember the exact price but was a lot cheaper, even with shipping than getting a new pack.

reviving my old thread, is there a way to check the condition of a Prius battery, in this case an NHW20R.. it runs okay.. just wondering if they have an on board diagnosis / test feature?
