have you set the fuel float level? need to check with new carb, cos it can be bounced in transit.
being a china copy carb, worth having a look inside for any loose crap/machining swarf etc that could be clogging jets..

does it stutter when going from say, 2000rpm to WOT?

had a little play round last night, noticed the old carb had two pipes coming from the exhaust manifold that i think it used to heat up some metal coil? the new one didnt need it, so there was 2 exhaust leaks right of the bat! noticed also that the vac line from the carby to the vacc advance didn't fit very tightly, so i plugged the exhaust leak, secured the vac hose and reset the timing.

the stuttering/stalling dissappeared! now the car was warm and the problem previously seemed to lessen when warm, so ill start her up today when i get home from work and see if its still there when colder.

    to answer your questions:

ctrain: like old corollas said its a china copy carb, from a later model hiace, they came with the same 12r engine, so should be jetted correctly.

oldcorollas: no it doesnt do it when going from 2000rpm to WOT, i checked out the carb when i bought it checking for any crap the factory may have missed/left in there, but i also believe the float while close, may be running a little low, is it hard to adjust the float in these? as it looks like i have to take the whole top plate off the carb to get to it..

okay, progress, replaced quite a few old cracked hoses running from the intake manifold with new lines and decent clamps, i also found that the vacuum advance was busted (was not holding vacuum) so this is more than likely the source of the vac leak and the stumbling on acceleration, now wheres the best place to find a vacuum advance for a 12r engine? my google-fu doesnt seem up to standard..

/edit ordered one off ebay, repco and toyota both didn't want a bar of it.

here is a photo of the beast your trying to help get running again :-)

    http://s1030.photobucket.com/user/ve...tml?sort=3&o=0

now this is what i see when adjusting the timing, with upwards being advancing the timing and downwards being retarding, the light gray arrow on the left is the timing marker, the darker gray arrows/notches seem to be cast into the pulley, and the two lines are painted on, now the manual says to set the timing to 10 deg before tdc, so i assumed the white mark is tcd, and the yellow is 10deg before tdc, so i should set the timing mark to line up with the yellow?

but i found this http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/foru...-timing-marks/ which states that the three notches should be what im setting my timing off, should i just get the car to TDC and see which one it lines up with?

do you know how to find TDC?

I'd find TDC, work out which mark that corresponds to, and go from there

found tdc, it was the white mark, set the advance to slightly more advanced than the yellow, seem to run best like this.

now ive started a plog here http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/showthread.php?t=82599

im having a hell of a time starting her from cold, i have to really hang on the starter multiple times to get her started, once she is going she starts fine, and once warm runs really well, any ideas?

now i know what your all saying, i really want a vh44 remote booster and willwood dual master cylinder but i want a new one at almost half price! now look no further http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/north...135553?ref=ais

What's the choke setup? I noticed this on an earlier post: "noticed the old carb had two pipes coming from the exhaust manifold that i think it used to heat up some metal coil". Possible that this is (was) your automatic choke. If the new carb does not use this, you'll need an alternative - probably just a manual choke. Choke butterfly should be set at around 30-40 degrees (from vertical) when starting from cold.

I have been putting of posting this because i feel like an incompetent twat, as soon as you mentioned choke, something sparked, I HADN'T HOOKED UP THE CHOKE AT ALL! for some reason i thought it was an auto choke, (getting the newer model hiace carb) so never looked to install a choke cable, found the clamp and the pulley installed the choke cable over the weekend, and she starts first pop! and runs like a beauty! im guessing my old one was a bi metal coil type setup, utilizting the exhaust gas.

she is running pretty good now, so unlees some other drama presents itself i shouldnt *fingers crossed* need this thread anymore.

Thanks again, everyone who helped me out, ta22fan, old corollas and Dazza escpecially! now to get that RWC!
