Just got the oil pressure guage hooked up.

What are the average readings i should see at idle....and under load.

What are scary readings and what sort of fluctuations should i look for to identify potenial onset of issues?

atm its ST Oil amp guage getting signal from a pricol sender.
motor has never had issues adn at idle currently it reads around 34-40 roughly.

and the guage read lb/in2 which is pounds per square inch. am i right in assuming thats PSI?

Yep lb/in2 is P.S.I and 30-40 at idle is good, should be around the 60 mark at revs but also depends alot on what type and grade of oil you use.
As a reference the 18RG i had was about 5psi at idle which quickly climed to 60psi at anything over 2500rpm.

good to here. just not sure if the sensor / guage combo would read right.

plan an temp hooking up a mechanical guage i have on the weekend to compare readings.

mines about 50 at idle when cold, and can get down to 10psi {usually 15-20} when warmed up, never does over 60 tho, even at 7500rpm, so i can tell my relief valve works

Hi,

It shouldn't fluctuate at idle. I can't remember what it is at idle, but it's low and the needle is rock steady. Above 2500rpm it will got to 60 and again it should be steady.

I'll be back in Sydney next week to take the old girl for a drive - she's done about 50km since August, so she'll need a bit of a run. Also, my 18RG manuals are at home and they have all the engine pressure/temp specs - unless I lent them to Witzl and if he sees this post and can give you a definitive answer from the Toyota manual.

You are running a genuine Toyota oil filter aren't you? They cost a few dollars more, but they are the best filter for the 18RG. More than a few members have found the original oil filter to fix a few probs, like fluctuating oil pressure and quicker oil delivery/pressure on engine start.

how long after start up do u get a reading on your guage

i have an elec guage, my car usually starts very quickly {first crank} and i wait about 2 secs to see pressure, if i have issues {if i dont give it enough fuel ect} and i have to crank it a few times, then i have to wait about 0.5 secs

what do u guys see

crank - run - reads.

numbers are far between on the guage....goes from 30- 60 or siomething so when i say 30-40 thats the area the needle is in. at idle it was staedy .... havent tested under load (still have a lower front block leak to fix.

Just ws after what to expect....big change after 3 months without readings...not even a dummy light

PS non genuine because of carby clearance issues.... but i have since cut the long pipe (modified 18rc mount) and will be getting a genuine within the week.

Hi,

About half a second before the gauge is registering after start up. If it takes longer or you hear the engine rattle and protest for a few seconds then the oil is taking too long to get to the engine, and this is not good. Non genuine Toyota filters are notorious for taking their time to get the oil flowing and you can hear a few seconds of protestation from your poor oil starved engine - not good at all.

Also, the 18RG doesn't like to be revved hard straight away on start up. When cold and you start it, try not to get it over 2000rpm until the oil guage comes up, then you can have your revs - even though I personally treat mine gently until the temp gauge gets up to around 80Celsius.

80 mine only got to 80 at wakefield and on certain rds doing 140 in 30degree heat?!

Hi,

I'm talking 80C water temp. She'll go to 80C then the thermostat opens and she drops to about a needle-width below 80 and she'll stay there rock solid. However, on a stinking hot 40C summer day, in traffic, with the air-con going she can get about a needle-width above 80. When driving fast (which is 110kph for an old fella in an old car) she'll stay on 80 if hot and with air con going, otherwise a whisker under under. This is within specs according to the manual - one of the few things I remembered 'cos I was worried about it. Sorry about terms like "needle width", but without a proper calibrated thermometer this is the best I can give - inidicative readings on the standard temp gauge.

I'm always on the look out for one of those very rare, very expensive JDM GT oil temp strip gauges. It's be nice to see the oil temp.

i know water temp! same normal and in heat just a needle under 80.

up the spee for prolongued periods and she'll just hit 80.

alas but no air con so that may be a contributor.... id crap my self if she went ova 80

Just checked through my toyota manual, couldnt find anything on oil pressure readings. I personally use the ryco Z148(i think, ill double check in the morning) filter with anti drain back valve(cheaper than the toyota genuine item and does the same job of quick pressure readings). I get pressure about 0.5 sec after it starts running. quicker if it takes a while to start. Im currently running 40W70 oil(hot climate up here) which gets me 20psi at idle and up to 70 at revs. It increases very rapidly after idle. This is measured with a near new autometer ultra-lite pro-comp mechanical guage.

i think oil pressure should be above 10psi at idle... below that my feelings are that your bearings will be running pretty thin on the oil coatings

above 2000-2500rpm i think pressure should be 50-70psi and very steady. If's it's not steady - either pulsing, surging or slowly building... check relief valve, PCV system and rings...

i'll be hooking up my oil pressure guage before i get the engine running again, and will let you know what the pressure is like. Im scared to think what it was doing with the amount of blowby i had before...

15-20psi at idle when warm, upto 70psi and holding when revving it out.

it takes upto two seconds to get the pressure reading when starting it up.

That's using some high performance thick synthetic oil, not too sure on the exact specs of it, but it has been great in the hot weather, the old XLD premium just got too thin for Adelaide conditions on hot days.

Well i finally got my oil pressure guage installed....

Using a GENUINE TOYOTA Oil Filter, it only takes 1-2 seconds to get oil pressure.
When cold, oil pressure is 70-80psi

At operating temps:
Idle - 25-30psi (1200rpm, a little high)
above 2500rpm - ~65psi
above 3500 - steady 70psi
