Default 18rg Can pistons be removed without removing the crank

I think my rings are stuffed and want to remove the pistons from the bottom end to replace them

Can this be done without removing the crank ?
Has anyone attempted it before ?
More importantly is it possible to reinstall the piston ?

    Cheers in advance

Blanky, when I assemble an engine, the Crankshaft is always the first piece to go into the block. Pretty much standard procedure. If your rings are stuffed, your bores will also have some wear particularly on the thrust side, this makes the bores oval, and you would need to at minimum hone the cylinders. Bore and hone is the way to go with new pistons and rings, because if your bore is worn and you simply replace the rings you will end up with mega piston slap. Last thing you want is your engine sounding like a diesel and lasting a few hundred K's before it self terminates!

and yea man you need to pull the pistons out the top, so the head has to come off

    cheers Chuck.

problem with this is not pulling off the head or pulling out the pistons, but removing the sump to get to the connecting rod bolts.
On a ra28. front sump 18rg. One side of the steering arm needs to be dropped.
Also, u will need to undo the engine mount bolts and gearbox mount bolts to raise the engine at least 3/4" to 1".
its the only way to clear enough room to take the sump off, as u still have the oil pump connected.
If theres a better way let me know as this is where my car stands Atm.

p.s dropping the engine crossmember instead did not come to mind.

Why do people try these in car half arsed jobs? Pull the bloody engine out and whack it on a turnover stand. You will never try an in car pulldown again.

Turnover stands circa $150.00, hoist daily hire if you don't own one.

    cheers Chuck.

i've seen and heard worse attempts of repairing cars on toymods.
this is to me an neccesary evil, as the car is not mobile, no space in front for a non existant engine hoist, nor the time to leave it some where and get back to finish it.
So, yes it seems harsh, but doable and with 2 car stands and a jack. That pretty good going in my book.
