Default return to sump or not?

    hey guys,
scored an oil catch can off a mate and im about to install it on my 4age sprinter. anyone know of different methods of installation r better than others. i was considering setting it up so the oil returns to the sump but my mate says it will collect condensation and eventually that will end up in my motor and sieze it! anyone know if this is true or should i stick with my original plan and have it return to my sump?

    cheers

    bugger... reply got canned....

anyways, running it as a catch first is a good idea to see how much moisture will be caught.. if you are catching emulsified oil, then you don't want it going back to the sump...

at worst, if you leave it as a catch, then you can pour good oil back in if it collects.
it is also better (emissiosn wise) if the vent of the catch can (it should really be called oil/air seperator) be routed back to the intake tract, as is the case with the rocker cover breather in a stock setup...

No it's not legal, as Stuart said it must "vent" back into the inlet tract.

My car has been running a catch can for about 5 or 6 years now. It has a 19mm line from the cam cover to the can, a 19mm line from the can back into the inlet pipe and a 14mm line draining to the sump.

Works a treat, never had an issue. My oil is changed about every 5000km and looks good enough to be run for much longer but I like to look after my gear so I change it regularly

Now give me a rep point Just kidding

Any condensation gathered in your oil catch can will do the same thing as the rest of the condensation that gathers in your engine ! At running temperature your engine oil is over 100degress so it boils out.

Plumbing your catch can back in will cause no more drama's than if you don't. Either way you will get condensation gather as your engine cools down and sucks in air/moisture from the atmosphere. Either way it will boil it back out once its hot The question is... Do you want to have to empty your catch can or better still do you want to see how long it takes to overflow it

i dunno man, i got some eville shit coming out of the K motor.... i would still prefer to see what was coming out...to start with...

but strangely enough (or not really) once the EFI went on, a lot of the blowby stopped.... less fuel, not washing oil off bores etc = less to catch (except the infamous K motor right hand corner phenomenon)

personally, i wouldnt route it back in
if you're getting that much blowby to require having to top it up/route it back before a major 5000km oil change something is definately wrong
