    Default Electric aerial wiring

Just wondering if anyone knows how the ford electric antenna's are wired up?

The motor has two wires - pos & neg. polarity one way it goes up, polarity the other way it goes down.

Is there some special relay you can buy that has two pole which when switched, it reverses the polarity? - Most stereos only have one wire for electrical aerial which provides 12v when radio is on..

Toyota ones also have the same two wire setup and go through a relay inside, which sends it up or down when power is applied to it from the stereo. The relay must have a current load sensing circuit so that it stops applying power when it gets to the top or bottom.

I think it is normally mounted on the passenger side (left) under the dash or behind the kick panel on Toyotas equiped with it from the factory - sorry no part number.

Surfs, Cressidas and 80 series Landcruisers have them. If the antenna is electric it should have one and you will see the two power wires next to the antenna lead (I say this since the front fender is probably going to be off if at the wreckers and it will make it easy to find).

If you see a 80 series Landcruiser with a up/down/auto dash switch for the aerial please get it (if under $30) and I WILL pay you for it as mine is a jap spec model and does not have the auto option.

Ive already got about 3 ford fairlane aerials at home, Im planning on using one of them. Its just a matter of getting a box to control it. As for the landcruiser gear, Dont think upullit has a great deal in the way of 4WDs...

its easy to wire a DPDT switch to do it, get a momentary switch on both sides, then cross the wires like in the pic below. push the switch up and it goes up down and it goes down, you can worry about fancy smancy circuit to do AUTO if you wish but i probably wouldn't bother, people will think it is cool you can control it any way you want.

You could wire a relay the same way...

He just needs the control box, so the cressida one should be fine, although they all seem to be identical (not sure about part numbers though).

They have 3 or 4 control signals though ... Something like constant power, ignition power, accessories and antenna out from stereo...

I think the idea is that it doesn't drop the aerial if you're starting the car.
In simplest form the antenna out from the stereo (and constant power) would be enough, but then if you don't start the car immediately, the stereo shuts down as you hit the starter, and the antenna will start dropping. If you add the accessories power, it will still drop on start.
If you add just ignition power, it could be enough, but if you add both ignition and accessories the control box will know what's going on.
(I haven't tested this, just a hypothesis based on the number of control signals running to the control box).

The control boxes also must be timer based. Something has to tell the motor in the electric aerial when to stop, otherwise it'll keep try to extend.

Does anyone know of any car other than a Ford Fairlane/Falcon/LTD that uses an electric aerial that can be switched to be at half mast?

With the fords theres a switch on the dash that allows you to have the aerial at either full height, or half way. This is really what I need. With the fords it's controlled by the BEM (body electronics module) but wiring that up has got me stumped and as a result Ive even had to sign up to a Ford forum to try and sort the problem out!

Check this link for a more detailed description of the problem!:

If you use a switch like NDGCPR suggested you can just release the lever when you have the aerial at whatever height you want.

The locally delivered 80 series Landcruiser (the earlier one 90-93?) have a three button switch on the dash for up/down -plus an auto option. As I understand it you set the maximum height using the up/down button and it when on auto it stops at the preset height - needs to be verified.

I have the control module at home which is meant to be for this setup and when I come across the proper switch I intend to find a wiring diagram and fit it into my imported 80 series cruiser which just has a manual up/down button and no auto function.

Go around to some car dealships who sell the Landcruiser to look for and test the switch or try find a wiring diagram for the electric antenna on the Landcruiser to see if it truly does this. If you still need the part number for the module in 3 weeks I can get it for you.

Current sensing - motor slows down or stops, current increase is detectable (like power window auto up/down).

Yeah I was thinking about that, and it does make sense.
