Ola
My rear diff clunks and bangs badly on accel/decel. suspect needs new crush tube/pinion gear set.
however
I have also done 300,000km on the old CV joints in the car. 100,000km of which with the 7MGTE, which the MA61 wasn't designed for.
I want to ensure it's not also the CV joints
how to check them in RWD car? how much slop should there be etc?
Anything else I should check when diagnosing clunking?

I would think it unlikely you have a collapsed pinion spacer, I have never seen one in the past & has been said you should have diff wine on over run if that was the case .. The Main thrust load on acceleration is taken through the pinion front cone bearing, the collapsible spacer is for setting up pinion bearing preload only ..
I would be looking at sub frame / diff mounts for cracking torn mounts, or you could have excessive back lash in the diff due to worn bearings, also check your tail shaft Uni's too ..
Checking rear CV's can be done by applying the handbrake & holding the inner CV outer body to stop movement there & try to twist the Half shafts fore wards & back wards whilst looking for excessive movement / rotational in the half shaft itself, there should really be very slight to No movement noted ..

great thanks guys.
there is a whine at 70kph, on cruise.
putting in the clutch or otherwise a sharp transition between power on/power off creates loud and violent clunking.
the bushes in there have never really been looked at so might replace them all when i do the rear subframe camber adjustment
tailshaft is virtually new
diff bearings would only be 20,000km old...
i've got redline shockproof heavy in there, perhaps it doesn't like it?
My daughters liberty used to thump on accel/decel. Turned out was diff mount rubber bushings were buggered, so the snout of the diff was thumping around on accel/decel.
To check bushings maybe support on rear subframe, then put a jack under the diff and see if it moves at all?
I have redline in my diff (also trutrak) - no clunk
1982 MA61 2JZ-GTE 354rwhp @ OST Dyno Day #4
I'm beginning to think that's what it is - the mountings
I also think I may not have done the diff up tight in it's subframe
I'm not convinced I should be an engineer lol
