Paul Pyyvaara's half cut was in excellent condition when he bought it, and the quality of the conversion was A1. Methinks there must have been some sort of localised engine fire.

that seems most likely to me if the loom has been deemed unusable... still, depending on the location, most of the plugs should be reusable.

In my opinion "loom problems" is the magic bullet to describe any possibly electrical related gremlins that no-one can diagnose/be bothered working out. A loom is not some magical, mystical beast, it is just a bunch of wires.

I may be wrong in this case, but I think a bit (maybe a lot) of time with a multimeter, some wiring diagrams and some brain power should sort out the problem. Maybe a dodgy plug connection, maybe a broken sensor, maybe a shorting wire.

However without a more detailed description of the problem there's not much we can suggest.

No no engine fire or anything like that. Just started behaving strangely in recent times and now it nolonger idles without stalling.

Spoke in detail with the mechanic this morning.

He said the wiring is fine, but its the plugs that are falling apart.

Hmmm, so your mechanic's solution for some dodgy plugs is a $2500 loom plus probably $500-1000 labour to install it? Seriously, find a new mechanic, that's shit.

My Aristo engine had a few dodgy plugs which caused problems with poor idle, random stalling etc. Specifically it was the ignition coil plugs, which are located right on top of the engine where they get uber hot and thus get brittle and fall apart with age. I bought six new plugs from Toyota for about $100 from memory, and it took about half an hour to put them in and everything was sweet again.

Interesting... it's the coil plugs he specifically mentioned as being stuffed. He never actually suggested that purchasing a new loom from toyota was a realistic solution. But he has his doubts about the condition of the rest of the plugs. Hence his suggestion about replacing the loom.. just not with a new one.

Hopefully I can still manage to get a set of plugs from toyota for the ignition coil. You wouldn't happen to know the part numbers?

I know of a local place in perth that has a 2jzgte engine, blocks damaged though so he's seperating it. From a supra thought, 6 speeed manual.

I'll find out tomo for the price of the harness and you'd need the ecu.

There is really very little reason to question the rest of the plugs. The ignition coil plugs, as Norbie said, are placed in extreme temperature situations - many engines have damaged plugs and tubing in the plug valley - it's just a fact of life when using such engines Replacement of the convoluted tubing while wiring up a conversion is almost a certain requirement with any engine that has been "properly" used.
It certainly doesn't make the rest of the loom suspect or unusable.

The only other plugs that might have a chance of having heat related problems are near the turbos but they're far enough away not too get placed under a lot of thermal stress.

If you can't find them at toyota, they are standard toyota 2 pin ignition coil plugs - you can go up to 6 AE92 corollas (at a wrecker, not a carpark ) with small port 4AGE engines and cut off just that plug - it will be the same. Otherwise cut one off your engine, and go for a walk through a wrecking yard, there will be other toyota models with the same plugs.

Show me where I can buy non-genuine ignition coil connectors? I'm afraid there wasn't much choice in this situation.

I'm pretty sure I got the part numbers from supraforums.com.au. Search around and you should be able to find them too.
