only recently occured, got it sorted, spark was blue, but apparently not strong enough. bent the tabs on the cap in and it started. BUT. now its running, its on 3cyl below 2000rpm, high pitched rythmic squeak from top of the motor, changes with rpm. cyl 4 is the dead one, sneezes fairly often from that carby too. thinking vacuum leak, ive a socket set and thats it. anyone had this before? ive seen v8s with a single plane manifold squal like a kettle due to leaks, but i imagine since this is a runner per cylinde, id expect the pulsating squeak like ive got. i dont know what else would cause such a noise

Valve train damage maybe ?
Have you pulled number 4 plug out and checked spark ?
Spray carb cleaner, brake cleaner, anything in aerosol around the whole intake tract of #4, mainly around the gasket area. If problem goes away momentarily and then comes back, you've got a vacuum leak... you can probably pin point it by being less liberal on the cleaner working your way toward the area where "it solves the problem". If that don't cure it, spray some down the #4 carb an see if it help. If yeah then that carb is not fueling your engine properly.
Otherwise you can scratch that off your list and move toward the head :S
Hope that can help you.
You said you bent the tabs in on the cap, i'm assuming you meant inside the distributor cap, if that's the case not a good move, it will / can cause hairline cracks inside the cap & then tracking / arcing / missing too the best way is to sit the very tip of the rotor button ( the brass section only ) on say the edge of a vice & then hit it with a hammer to flatten out / lengthen the very end of the rotor button, works well ... Is there spark on No 4 cylinder now & did it miss before too ?? Check the noise is not coming from the dist cap after you bent the tabs in, probably not but worth listening too, sounds like as you said a possible vacuum leak ?? spray some crc or such around the carby body & manifold sandwich area & see what happens, if its leaking air the revs will increase & start running on that cylinder ..
As has been mentioned if none of the above changes anything I would be carrying out a comp test & going from there ..
I did have a spark problem years ago.
ended up being a bent dizzy shaft.
Once i changed it, all was fine.
I still have the dizzy as a momento. lol

found! i didnt have any carby cleaner or anything around, literally just some sockets and 3 screwdrivers. but as i was going around checking all the manifold bolts, it sneezed out the carby and i felt it on my hand! so, voloius, replaced rear carbs gasket, fixed, that where it was! relieved too as i was starting to get worried. thanks for all the help fellasand that was a good idea lexmaz
i did as you said and used my spare cap. number 4 had spark once i got it running
but the cylinder was dead, the new gasket has cured that though
