    Default 5ME head bolts

just had to replace the head gasket on a 5ME..

anyone know the torque setting for the head bolts?

a quick search of the net / forums and I haven't found the specs..
hopefully someone here has done it before..

    cheers

My MX62 Cressida Haynes manual says

    51 to 61 Ft-lb

btw, must have been hard not to put a 1jz in instead of doing the head on the 5me eh!

    Cheers

    As above,

Just done my brothers in the last couple of weeks.

We set them at 57. After ~1000k's we popped the cam cover off and just cracked them then re-torqued to 58 ft lb's.
    meh...

    you wouldn't read about it..

got the head cleaned up.. and the block..
new gaskets all over the place.

Torqued the head down to about 60ft-lbs

    plonked the motor back in.

    away she goes..

20 mins of driving pleasure before the temp gauge went off the chart.

    hmm.. suspected BHG again!!

    what a waste or time & $$
maybe it is time for an engine conversion

if the head had been worked on at some stage, you might find that water galleries - particularly near #5 and #6 are get too close to the fire rings.

Mine had corroded to the point where they overlapped - resulting in my BHG of new years eve '05 (yeah, fucking great night that was...not).

Making mine worse was that the previous engine rebuilder had machined out the gallery holes (so they matched the bore) with what was probably a cordless drill - and had used a drill larger in diameter than existing width of the gallery - this only brought the water even closer to the fire rings.

anyway - it reads like you're junking the thing anyway - but for those who are doing a BGH, a simple sanity check is to lay the new gasket over the head and check that you've got reasonable clearances between water jackets and combustion chambers. If you're just replacing the blown gasket, you'll be able to see the outline of the ring on the headface.

That would be a surefire way to learn nothing tho...

Experience is everything and why are we here on this forum if not to learn

We used the old 5ME from matty's crown.. which never overheated.. the gasket was blown between cylinders.
    Clean radiator.. no
    Water pump looks pretty new
    Change thermostat.. no

And, this might sound real obvious, but did you change the oil / emullsion?
yes - thats one thing we did do.

yeah.. one of the water galleries was pretty close to the cylinder .. so we patched it up with some liquid steel (yep, went with the cheap fix to save costs)... we suspect that this is the weakest point. most likely the liquid steel didn't hold and broke off and then blew the head gasket between #6 and the water gallery..

thought it would have lasted longer than 20mins tho!!
