Tuning With a Haltech E6X - Ive got Some Questions

So first off ill start with sorry if these questions have been covered alot, my internet is slow, real slow and searching was taking hours with no questions answered.

My ke20 has been running a Haltech E6X for a few years now, ive also had the software to tune it for some time.

I wish to connect the two and do some retuning/System checks, etc.

The old Haltechs run a Serial Port (i beleave thats it?) as a Diagnostic connection, ive been looking around for a old laptop with a Serial Port on and off for a bit now with none of the ones i get ending up working. (ether cant load the program onto the Laptop or the Laptop Doesnt want to work/Locked, etc) Ive got one hear, i think it didnt want to load the File?

Can i use a newer laptop to tune with?
How and whats the best way to connect between the E6X and Laptop?
Will it still be safe?

Also ive been reading over the Haltech manual and cant find any area that covers Connecting the ECU to the PC, as in will there be a correct and incorrect way of connecting the two.
As in, when to power up the ECU?
Should i have the PC turned on when Connecting/Disconnecting?
and so on.

I dont know about the older ECU's but im running a PS2000 and the laptop can be on or off plugged in or unplugged
i find power up first then connect to laptop as on new haltech it will download the current config to the laptop

Again different ECU but i had 9 pin serial port on the back of my EMB cable and picked up an adaptor cable(9pin to usb) with software for $2 online.. easy fix when the laptop you are intending to use has no serial port

You can use a good quality Serial to USB cable to make the connection to newer computers.

If you run Windows 7 ultimate there is a Windows XP32 emulator that can be installed to run the Hadwin software in a virtual 32bit XP environment.

Mine is clunky but this this is due to an older computer that doesn't support the emulator in the Bios.

other than the above.
i guess u can use a serial PCI card, that slips into the newer laptops card slot. They usaully have a dummy card already in there.
You get a small cd with drivers for the card. It worked for my emanage piggy back unit and newer laptop..

Belkin have most adapter cables for all these occasions.
