    Default MA61 5m-e Head Change

I'm just about to change the head on my Supra <--- I love saying Supra (no offence to my old Corona)

    It has the 5m-e engine.

I looked up the MA61 Supra dedicated thread to see if I could find any information on the 5m-e. There's 1127 pages dedicated to MA61's so I typed 5m-e in to the Search Thread provision and it came up with NO MATCHES!!!! Just how unpopular are these motors !!!!!!

Question: While I'm changin the head, what if any of that mass of hoses under the bonnet can I throw in the bin ? e.g. If I wanted to put a pod filter on it, what do I do with the hoses that go from the power steering to the air filter ?

    Any help appreciated,

    Trevor

fitting a "pod" filter to the intake is easy. remove the the old round airfilter/box and attach pod to the AFM, but in saying that if i remember right the AFM has a square end on it which means you will need a mounting plate for the pod

i had a 5me in my MA61 and i do have an actual TSRM book for the 5me if ya need to know anything i can look it up for ya

Side question- Is there an online TSRM that features the 5M-E? The closest I can find is a 5MGE TSRM but I may not be looking hard enough.

Trevor, someone said to me the other day that the 5M-E only needs 2 vac hoses to run...I dont know which ones, and they may have been exaggerating. But I assume that means you can just delete the air pump and everything that goes with it quite easily. If your vac hose diagram under the hood is still readable (or ask someone to post up their readable diagram) then I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to figure out which ones you need to keep and which ones you don't need and can plug at the source.

BEVANI: Thanks for that info re the filter and if I need to know anything I'll let you know for sure. Cheers

Patrick: Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to track down that "someone" and grill them further. Surely lots of them could go without any adverse effects. I don't have a vac diagram. but, will try to get one.

Today I found out that what I thought was part of the power steering is actually the air pump you talk about. From tommorrow, may it rest in peace.

there really is alot of vac lines on those motors.. and the air pump what a PITA!

as for the pod filter i found an old pic of my engine bay pre engine removal, it actually fitted on directly to the base plate

    MEN !!!!

madmont: Thanks for the diagrams. Beautiful. Appreciate them greatly.

BEVANI: Thanks for that pic too. Would love my engine bay to end up looking something like that. I do have a pod filter and an adaptor from my now defunct 22re that hopefully will fit. My problem was I thought that air pump was part of the power steering and I was wondering what the hell I do with those hoses that go in the back of the air filter. Turns out I can just get rid of that air pump.

CELICASUPRA7M: What is the FPR ?

fuel pressure regulator, it is roughly in the middle of the fuel rail and has a vacuum line coming off the top and the fuel return line to the tank coming off the bottom. May be underneath your intake piping (based off my junk 5me+t)

the 22re and 5me filter to afm bolt holes are the same to the best of my knowledge so pod filter is a go if you think it will help.

fuel pressure regulator, definatly read it on this forum, most of the crap can be removed with no ill effects.
However if trying to gain performance, its prob a waste of time. At the end of the day your dealing with a small capacity single over head cam motor using very basic fuel injection tech.
You would be better off in my opinion to just drive it as is, save your pennies and get a 2JZGE conversion underway when u can

CELICASUPRA7M is fair on the money with that ^^

IMO the 5ME has about as much potential as a brick has aerodynamics, unless you have a 5MGE or even a 7Mxxx
id be sourcing a NA 2j as a base, for that matter any xJZ motor will far more exceed and outlast the tractor motor that is the 5ME and there is more than enough info online to do an engine conversion of just about any kind

what are your overall plans/goals ?

To HMI265 & CELICASUPRA7M. Thanks for the information. Appreciate it. I'm not really after performance as I do understand these motors aren't racers, it's just I'm have to take the head off and there's so many pipes and hoses leading into other pipes and hoses I was hoping to just chuck some away if possible. Too many hoses annoys me.

The bloke I bought the car off has a 2JZGE in his Supra and it certainly goes well though he also has a 5m-ge sitting in his shed that I wouldn't mind getting a hold of. That'd do me, but, he's a bit reluctant to part with it.

    Thanks again.

BEVANI: Plans are too rid it of rust, which as far as I can work out so far there's not a lot, paint it. Get it looking how it should. Put a 5m-ge in it and leave it as an auto. I'm liking not having to change gears. No big plans. I just love the charachter of the Ma61's. Loving it more every time I look at them.

Remove air pump, add moderate psi SC14 in place. Win?
