You'd be best off fixing the one you've got - got to an auto elec if you want, but if you can get ahold of the bits (ask auto elec if you can't find elsewhere), then it's much cheaper to put it together yourself.
The solenoid clicks but nothing happens. Eventually it will start, has been doing this off an on for months and is getting worse. I cleaned the contactor and it still does it. Stuffed brushes? The contacts look really worn out in it though. They are a copper thing which looks easy to replace if you can get a new one.
Is it easy and cheap to get brushes and contacts for the solenoids in these things or should I just get a used one? What sort of prices would I be looking at for parts or a used starter?

I have done the brushes etc on starter motors before, but was just wondering on the availability of parts.
it will be the contacts
you can buy them for about 10 dollars a pair at auto elec
just pull them out and match them up
Cool, so a normal auto elect would have these type contacts for a 2JZ starter?
Will Toyota know what the hell I am talking about if I say "supra" or "aristo"? What other Toyota's have the same starter motor? It will be extremely inconvenient for me to remove the old ones and bring them in.
unless you order genuine you will have to remove them as there is about 10 different shapes of them ( contacts) and genuine there is 2 differnt starters availible so you will have to know what you have before getting parts. early 2j has the box looking solonoid and late looks like a common old time solonoid.

Tell them it's for a Lexus GS300, they have a 2JZ-GE. I imagine lots of Toyotas will have the same starter so they should have parts in stock.Originally Posted by 2JZR31
Or just take it to an auto sparky, they'll likely have the bits on hand and will sort it out for you in no time.

FYI The 1JZ starter will work. I just swapped my dead 1JZ starter for a FKN HUGE 2JZ one. I took some comparison pics if anyone is interested.
maybe it could just be the starter is not gettin a solid 12v power this happens with alot of toyota wiring looms, a simple relay in line to the starter will fix this if its the problem, even if its not its cheap insurance.

Like BeRad says it would be worth adding a relay. I had this problem on a previous car and since I was stubborn I cleaned the contacts with wet and dry, rotated the pins 180deg etc etc. I did this a few times until I bit the bullet and added the relay and that was the last I had to worry about it.
Maybe checking the contact for the starter on your ignition barrel is worth doing.
The solenoid is pulling in so its not that. I can hear it clicking so it is receiving power .
That will be it.Originally Posted by 2JZR31
Just take the old ones out and go to either an auto elec or you local parts shop. They are pretty generic in terms of contacts as they could suit a broad range of starters. I got mine from a local parts shop. They just matched them up in their parts books. Cost $5 a set
