    Default MA61 5M-E Spark Plugs

    I'm confused.

Have recently purchased an 84 Ma61 with the 5m-e motor. After all the recent rain, I discovered an owners manual floating in one of the wheel wells. Good find, maybe. I dried it out best I could, but, it doesn't have a front cover nor any indication of the exact car it is for, though it is for an ma61, maybe not my year. I'm hoping it's the right one.

Anyway, in it it says the correct NGK spark plug for the 5m-e is a BPR5EY. It also says the correct NGK spark plug for the 5m-ge is a BPR6EY.

Problem is: in the cars engine there were BPR6EY, not BPR5EY.

Question is: does it make any difference ?

The NGK website makes no mention of the pre 83 5m-e and makes no mention of the 5m-ge at all.

    Any help appreciated,

    Trevor

Difference between the BPR5 and BPR6 is how cold they run.

It may or may not make any difference at all. The most important difference in spark plugs is their gapping, which is usually either 0.8mm or 1.1mm, usually the old NGK system specified BPR5EY-8 or EY-11
Best I can find for an MA61 with 5M-E is chassis code MA61R-BLMQEQ
    ToyoDIY.com

Denso to NGK apparently says the NGK equiv is BPR5EAL or BPR5EY (no mention of plug gap though)
I seem to think they need an 1.1mm gap though. Googling around agrees with this (I know this isn't the best way of answering it though)

I personally would not be worried if they were running BPR6's.

    Thanks for the reply maj.

Like you say, the gap is pretty much what it's all about. When I pulled the plugs they were BPR6EY-11's. They were gapped at 1.1mm. Thing is, in this owners manual I rescued, all plug gaps whether they be for the 5M-GE or 5M-E and whether they be Denso or NGK, they are to be gapped at 0.8.

The ToyoDiy site uses W16EXR-U plugs which my owners manual translates to NGK as BPR5EY i.e. gap 0.8

Might have to go with that and see what happens.

    Bitsa,

the plugs you had are fine.... difference between 5 & 6 is the heat range.... lower number = hotter plug....

It can be a way to tune out (however slightly) an engine running rich... ( though this can be changed by modding the AFM as well )

the BPR5EY plugs are just fine...

    Cheers

Thanks for that Scott. Appreciate it.

I've only had the Supra for 2 weeks and after doing 424 k's it took 51 litres of fuel. That's 8k's to the litre. Surely it'll do better than that !!!!!!

The BPR6EY-11 that were in it were gapped at 1.1mm which I'm told is the correct gap for those plugs, but, nowhere in the owners manual does it say to use a plug with that size gap. All gaps are shown as 0.8.

    I'll go with the 5's.

    Cheers too.

    Bitsa,

    the 5ME likes to drink....

You should expect 12-15L/100km.... depends on how heavy your loud foot is !!!

I assume you have an auto ?? (which won't help either... )

to give you some background Jack, my silver car HAD a 5ME /Auto.... I've now swapped it to a 5MGE & W58.... MUCH MUCH MUCH better... Still, fuel usage, on highway was about 10-12L/100km. ( drove GC to Melbourne on pacific/hume hwy)

    Cheers

Ah well Scott. I love the car so will just have to pay the price re the fuel. Yes it's an auto and my foot is sometimes to the floor. The bloke I bought it off has a 5M-GE motor and a 7M something something motor in his shed so when the time comes I'll upgrade. For now though it's get the rest of it in order. It needs a lot of TLC. Should be fun.

    Cheers.

These cars have character. I can see why you've got two.

HOLY MOTHER OF SUPRAS, PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO GET 12L/100km!

Bitsa you have no idea how much I envy you right now lol

I've been getting +16L/100km in my '84 5M-E, I've tried driving nicely, I've tried driving angrily, I've high octane fuel, low octane, got my local car shop to bump around the timing, injector cleaner, flashlube, sweet talking it and tucking it into bed, but it's always the same! It's under 300km from a full tank to the fuel light coming on.

The best I've ever done was 342km from 53L.
I knew it would be thirsty but this is ridiculous

Patrick - not sure how we did it, but that was sitting on 100-110 on the pacific highway headed south... no leadfoot driving, just cruising along....

We have leaned out the AFM a bit.....

First port of call mechanically no matter what your car is for restoring fuel mileage, is the O2 sensor.

Of course everything else needs to be in order and better fuel helps, but unless you are getting correct readings your AFR's will never be what they should be.

Ok I'll have a look at the AFM/see if it is running rich, and lean it out a bit. Hopefully that's a solution
