Default Rear Steer Box to Power Steer Box/ Rack & Pinion (Lite - Stout)

    Hey Toyota Guru's

I have a 1968 Lite Stout going through the motions of Retro-Teching it somewhat.

Looking at different options to convert this over to power steering from the old dinosaur manual steering box.
At the moment the idler and the bottom of the pitman arm hangs lower than the engine X member. This will be a problem, Since the vehicles ride height will be lowered, substantially. Possibly onto the ground. Haha

Anyway I was looking into a rack and pinion setup. I read somewhere that Hiace are rear steer. Just like the Lite Stouts.

And some dimensions. Tie rod taper threads are M12

I looked at getting a left hook power steer box off a (American) Hilux since they are on the outside (left) of the left hand chassis rail. Which may work on the right chassis rail on its left side. But the drag link is still an issue with the idler arm hangs low.

    Any futher ideas?

    Thanks guys

If I were to source a left hook hilux power steer box.

To sort the idler issue out. I could use a 71,72ish Idler which is flipped.

I'd have to drill out the existing idler mount hole of the drag link, also find a tapered reamer to match the taper of the idler shaft taper.

Ah, now that clears it up completely!!!!

Can the steering arms be removed & reversed so they're in front , or swap spindles? Then a front mount PS rack.
    Good luck.

How do the 60 and 75 series landcriuser power steering units compare, they look similar and between the 60 and 75 one is front mount the other rear and all that is done between the two is swap Pittman

The f100 power steering box looks more suited, the cruiser ones are on the wrong side

Most RWD Toyota's from the 80's have the steering rack behind the engine.

If you just want to convert to power steering, also look into Crowns and Cressida's from the 70's and early 80's for something that may bolt on.

I'm not knowledgeable on what the Crown/Cressida steering boxes look like.
    But...
I have an idea so far.

To find a Lite Stout/ Stout 1900 LHD drag link. Flip it from left to right, And also flip the pitman arm also so the ball joint mounts from the top. Also the later model idler will mount from the top also.

Raising the drag link 40mm will also help bump steer since the tie rod arms wont be parallel with the ground when at lowered stance. Not to mention to for the idler & pitman arm gain some ground clearance too.

Then I'll find a RN series LHD drive steering box and mount that up. Hopefully the pitman arm splines are the same.

what is your bolt spacing on the steer box, I'll measure my crown one for you. the bolt pattern looks similar.

I've also been watching a build on a stout light that had a 2000's hilux front chassis swaped onto the stout chassis, or could you notch the front of the chassis to achieve the same goal??

Yeah I'd love to swap to the RN8* series front end but, the coil sprung A arm front ends are better for simplicity when swapping from Coil springs to Airbags. (Queensland yay!)
I'll be swapping to RN30 stub axles, disc brakes etc. The lower balljoint has to be a RN30 plus flipped upwards. So it will take the new stub axles. Which will free up a little suspension travel as well. Also lifting the drag link should help bump steer, which will angle the tie rod arms downwards. Lower these front ends too much and the tie rods are horizontal with the ground at ride height, any bump makes them toe out badly.

But I will Z notch the front end by 35mm.

    Steering Box dimensions are.

100mm x 50mm. (100mm apart left to right center to center, 50mm apart top to lower holes center to center)

    Bolt holes are M10.

    King pin Thread is M18
Pitman arm center to center is 135mm (roughly)

Looks like Cressida MX60's power steer box looks similar.

Pictures stolen from a 4x4 forum.

From the sounds of it the Tarago pitman arm the taper is mounted in from the top with the nut on the bottom (What I'm after)
