If it starts bucketing down we will go to Rhodes shopping centre
How'd the shoot go? Would've joined in but was out of town.
Did the weather hold off long enough?

weather held off, shoot was awesome especially once we got down to carriageworks. one of the others who had an SLR will hopefully be posting some pics, I just have crappy iphone stuff...
Did you get any pics with lightning etc in the background was a pretty good show on the drive home from work.
If in doubt power out
My first real attempt at playing around with night-time photos, unfortunately the hardware (kit lenses) weren’t quite up to the task so I was fighting either shadows or noise all night, and as such only a handful of photos turned out decent (even some that looked good on the LCD fell over when displayed on a monitor). Can’t wait for my bonus to come in so I can get a fast-prime…

Beige.... The new Black!!!
Don't be hard on yourself Hiro, you're just starting out with your DSLR, your shots from this thread and your members ride thread already show a good eye for composition, you're just on the learning curve If you're getting shadows then either the light is coming from the wrong place, the subject is in the wrong position, or you're taking the picture from the wrong position. Nothing to do with the lens. You'll get more noise on night shots the higher you crank the ISO. Kit lenses and lower-spec bodies are fine, particularly for static shots like these, as long as you are aware of their limitations and work out how to set your gear up to get the most out of it. Just keep practicing
Cheers

True, although it is hard to argue that in the lighting situations we had (all the Carriageworks shots were after 8pm, with very little lighting and a cloudy sky) that a nice fast prime lens would improve the hit ratio of good shots to bad, and make them easier to get as well (much more accurate and faster focusing at larger apertures).
Actually wishing I'd taken the HDR shot (the last one) at +-1.5EV rather than 3, it looks a little too washed out in the highlights (that was with onboard HDR though). Still, practice makes perfect...

You can always take the same pic in +-1.5 and then again in +-3, give yourself more to play with later. Just try not to move the camera when you change the setting

It was the last shot of the night and people were about to jump in cars to go get food, so I just seized the opportunity with whatever settings were in the camera at the time
