Default hilux 22r Carby electrical issues

Hey guys, we recently did and engine swap on my mates 89 hilux 22R carby motor as he had blown the head. We have the engine in fine but are now finding the earth from the battery to the guard wall is burning up as soon as the battery is connected. We are using a battery from a an AE92 corolla to see if it would start, probably half the problem there right?

Anyways initially when it happened we didnt have the engine earthed correctly and after looking in the net now have the current earth set ups: 1) back of Head to fire wall 2) Alternator earthed to PS bracket 3) earth from the starter motor to the bracket that holds the AC pump on the block.4) earth from negative battery wire to guard wall. I went of what someone had done with their EFI 22R.

Now we have put the battery in and it is crackling as soon as the negative is put on the terminal and are scared to persue it further.

Yes I am a retard when it comes to autoelectrics I mean its a freeking carby FFS haha but any help is much appreciated.

    Many thanks in advance
    Nath

The alternator doesnt need any earth wire because when you bolt it onto its bracket it gets earthed there. There should be a power wire from the positive battery to the back of the alternator which is about 4mm thick and is to charge the battery. The starter also shouldnt have an earth wire because it earths through being bolted to the bellhousing. There should only be a big power wire connected from the positive battery terminal to the starter and then a smaller power wire from the key to starter solenoid. If the starter runs as soon as the battery is connected then the starter solenoid is probably stuck on or there is power connected to the smaller spade terminal on the solenoid that should only have power running to it when you turn your key to the start position.

As Dazza has said, you dont need everything individually earthed, the battery you are using has nothing to do with the issue ..

Re check you have the battery wired up correctly ( Negative to earth ) & if everything is turned OFF there should be no crackling burning of the wire when you connect up the battery, but in saying that some big power stereo amps draw quite a current on intial battery connection & will spark but no burning of wires etc ...

If you are still getting crackling when connecting up the wire & you dont have a big stereo installed dont continue as you appear to have some sort of a short, so you will need to re check the wiring as something is wrong or pinched etc ..

thanks guys, looks like we had the positive from the starter being earthed. My auto lekky mate looked at it in 1 minute told us we were dickheads and it was done. Now we just need to bloody work out where all those vacuum lines went!
