Sounds like the converter isn't locked in the 3rd groove
Very common for people to make this mistake if u don't do autos often
U r using 1uz auto and not the mx73 one
I have mx73 that I'm putting a 1uz into, keeping it auto , so standard trans, everything is bolted up , engine sitting nice lined up to keep standard length driveshaft etc, but when I'm turning the crank to mate the flex plate with the torque converter bolt holes the flex plate is turning the torque converter with it therefore not letting me find he bolt holes, looks to be too tight together , any help ?

Will I have to remove to whole gearbox or can I just remove the bolts and pull at back a few inches ? What I mean is does it need a lot of force or wriggling to get onto the third groove?
I had a customer do a 1uz into a surf many years ago
He bolted converter to engine then tried to fit auto
Got auto on the first two clicks but the third is one in a million chance to get on once auto is on
He bent the flex plate cause he bolted auto to engine tight even when converter wasn't on right
Try getting it in that last spot without removing box if no luck it has to come out
U should have afew mm clearance from converter to bell housing
