I wouldn't bother making an EFI engine to a carburetted one...
Spend money on full engine conversion to get a JZ/7M or 1UZ, or if money is tight - rebuild the old 4M/5M...
Howdy all. I bought an MX32 a while ago, driving home the ol m-series kicked the bucket hard and was knocking very very badly. Doing rust repairs right now, but engine is the next thing on the list.
CBF converting the car to EFI, and don't have the money for a JZ halfcut or even 7mgte halfcut to convert it to EFI. How about ye olde 7mge? Fair bit of torque, has a distributor, should bolt up to the 4m mounts? Could be a nice little sleeper.
Questions:
1) What should I pay for a running 7mge?
2) Will a 5mge distributor (has vacuum advance) bolt in, and would sort out the ignition advance problem?
3) Will the old auto box be able to handle it?
4) Will the motor be horribly under-carbed with the old carburettor?
5) How close is the 7mge intake to the 4m/5m-e intake? Will I have to cut N shut together, or do a dodgy and hose-clamp some piping to join the 7mge intake to the 4m/5m intake?
Or is there another cheap engine that will be better, easier, that I'm forgetting?
Thanks![]()

there is a 7mge with harness and computer starting bid 500 bucks only problem its in qld
RT104 with 4AGTE
Some assembly required
1) Not much, as a lot of so called good running 7M's aren't that way for long. Better off factoring in some machine work and a new HG.
2) NFI. 5MGE dizzy is driven on the opposite of the head off the inlet cam rather than exhaust - but I don't know if is difference in drive size / number of teeth. Also, I thought later 5MGE's ran electronic advance anyway?
3) NFI - do you know what auto it is?
4) Yes. Factory 7MGE made about 75% more power than the early single cam M motors (any). Multi carbs might be worth it, but the dollars would start adding up pretty quick. I would love to see some triple Webbers (or ITB's for that matter) matched to some cams and high comp on a 7M though.
5) I know they are not interchangeable, but I don't know if they could be adapted readily or not. 7M manifolds fit on 5MGE / 6MGE, and vice versa, and 5ME and some 4M stuff is interchangeable. Not sure about the other M motors.
All in all, it may well be cheaper / easier to rebuild your current engine and do some mild mods whilst you're at it.
Some people off the top of my head which may have the kind of info you're after would be:
Cambelt: He plays with 7M's as well as early M stuff in various corona's / crowns etc.
Andrew MA83: Plays with 7M's and has done work with getting rid of EFI stuff on a few.
There was one other that I can't think of that also had an early crown or corona which has had a few M engines of various types / mix and matches.
MA71 - 7MGTE - 340RWHP
I did a 7MGE conversion in a Mark 2 Corona and it made it a 200% quicker car.As to price it depends on the person selling it.Wiring it up is easy as if you have a knowledge of wiring and can read diagrams,5MGE dizzy is different and as stated on the wrong side.4M inlet manifold will not go anywhere near bolting up.If taken easy the auto box will take it but the torque of the 7M compared to the 4M is alot higher.Either rebuild the 4M which is fairly cheap or find a 5ME which can be changed to carb using your manifold or even a 5MGE which is easy to wire and a bigger improvement over the 4M.
Cheers Brett.
The ole 7m-ge scrubs up alright when you ditch all the EFI gear.
Lpg carb but you get the idea -this is well worth a look and goes great if setup properly.
As others have said the older M manifolds wont fit. I think ive seen an old M with factory twin CD carbs which might work ok but not sure which one. Failing that a small 4bbl holley or maybe a big 2bbl or a pair of 2 inch SU's would be ok on a road going engine. LPG is still your best bet by far, impco 425 mixer will flow all the air you will even need and still give great driveability.
There is no substitute for PUBIC inches
Never late in an x8
Cool, thanks all for the info, quite helpful
So exactly what would I need for EFI into a carb'd car? Motor, how much loom? Fuel pump, all bolt-ons... Halfcut might be easiest :/
Wiring scares me a little, I've done a tiny bit, but willing to learn and I guess there'd be no better way... Any helpful guides etc around the traps that anyone knows of?
Bit of a bummer that every 7m for sale is blown up (or close) though![]()
You should probably buy a whole MX83 thats a bit bunged/damaged and unregoed (<1k?), but try look for the best deal: low km, one owner, some servicing, least amount of BHG. Theres no such thing as 7MGE half cuts existing these days since the Cressy's arent worth much...
With a whole car you'll have all the pieces and going from carb -> efi wiring you will def need it. If you find an okay 7MGE and start transplanting anyway, you're gonna find out like 75% down teh track that you have to pilfer through heaps of MX83's for the right gear you need anyway.
Get the whole head gasket job done on it before the engine gets transplanted into your MX32. Nothing wrong with plenty of 7M's after that's been taken care of, including high boosted ones.
Full steam ahead!

Thanks mate. Have thought long hand hard about the 1UZ route, since defected UZZ30 soarers are only a touch more than the mx83's. I feel like I'll be going down that route, need to ring a bloke tomorrow about one and hopefully snag it if it's in decent nick.
