fantastic find there on removing the turbos!
Yes, they are a slut. it's not a hard job to conceptualise, it's just a pita to actually get to the bolts.
I also have an article but it is a word doc on my home puter. That page is pretty good though.
hey chris if you could send your version of the document as well as i have to get these turbos off in 12hours... so i want to go in prepared with all the info.

Because you are removing them as a pair it's a bit easier. From memory it may be easier to take the 3 turbo to manifold bolts off each turbo than attack the manifold to block bolts. Other than that remove the two turbo watercooling pipes, 2 oil pipes, heater line at rear, ISCV intake and 1 vacuum line at the rear, 3 dump pipe bolts and bobs your uncle. A few different spanners, different size drives and universal joints will help with the hard to reach bolts. If you can't do it in 12 hours you don't deserve to own your car![]()
cool well thats what i want to hear... me and a few mates probably will buy a carton of beer and get the turbos off.
do you recon it will be alot harder because the 1jz is in a 180 or should it be similar to a soarer or a jza70?

You will find it harder, if there is less room.
I have removed the turbos off my 1jz, and 2jz, because i had them in my hilux, i found it easier to remove them whilst i had the motor out.
the biggest problem is the clearance between block and turbos - the chassis should not make too much of a difference.
And yes, many different types of extentions and unis will help a lot!
I don't know what sort of steering the 180 has but my biggest problem was the bloody steering box. I was stupid and took them off seperately as well.
On a related note, has anyone taken the turbos off a 2JZ while in the car? I have to do this in the near future and it looks like it's going to be a mission and a half...

Try to do it in a tight engine bay... It took me 9 hours to remove, and i removed the turbos leaving the exhaust manifold on the car. Putting it back on the car took me 5 hours...Originally Posted by Skip
Yes it's a hard job, get some proper tools to do it... Whilst your at it... If you want to do a 1JZGTE to 2JZGTE water pump, that's the best time because you can acess the back of the water pump to do up the two bolts that attach to the hard line. Otherwise if you change your water pump whist the turbos are on the car, you may find it a bit difficult.
Can't afford it?... Don't buy/drive it...

The only thing that will hinder your progress will be if you don't have enough tools which i've found and you need just the right size for certain bolts to make the right clearance in the tight gaps etc... it's not too hard a job, just time consuming.
how convienient, this thread appearing as one of my turbo's dies
This is a bitch and a half for you I can't wait to see how pissed off you get. j/k.
Your SAFC came, it looks better in black.
