Default 2jzgte head oil drain help NOW WITH PICS

Me and a mate are both building a 2jzgte and after we both put our heads on, we noticed that his head had 4 of these metal tubes plugged into the 4 oil drain holes in the head next to 4 of the head studs. But mine doesnt have this. We assume that these 'tubes' allow oil to fill up to a certain level in the head before draining, so when the oil is draining, there's still a constant level of oil for I guess the valves, and without them, oil will just drain out of the head instantly. I looked at my spare 1j head and that doesn't seem to have them either, and I need to figure out what to do about it before I put the cams in. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I can't get photos up for the next couple days sorry. What's the go? Sam.

    EDIT:

My mates head WITH those 'tube' oil drain like things.

These 'tubes' are roughly 30-40mm long and around 10-12mm wide

I just had a look at my na 2j head and they dont have them either, doesnt even have a bit for these tubes to sit, which is the same as my 1j head. So maybe they arent really necessary? Seems like some sort of oil overflow tube, so that the head retains a certain depth of oil under the cams

have they been installed afterwards by a previous owner/engine builder? the tubes look to sit higher thus would raise the oil level in the head in that area (around the buckets, etc).

Allencr, I've looked on toyodiy and it doesn't show them, its as though they are apart of the head, like you can't buy em seperately, don't have an individual part number if that makes sense. sheppo, you suggesting that maybe in my mates head, those tubes are aftermarket? not standard? in my head it seems to look like its meant to have those tubes, like there's a seat for them to sit in.

All i am saying is the part is 2nd hand and you cannot be 100% sure it is OEM. Just trawl through all the workshop manuals and also google images looking at pictures and diagrams of the cylinder head and try and establish if it's OEM.

Toyota may have done it as an update to increase the oil level in the head, or something along those lines?

That said, you say it looks like your head is meant to have them, then there may be a chance that they are OEM and yours have been removed by someone in the past.

Not in the parts book = not from the factory IMO.
Cam & lifters already have their own little lube sump/trough at the same height, so they wouldn't do them any good. They'd only be a low spot to collect sediment.
Maybe someones bright idea to dissipate heat?

yea I've spent a lot of time on google images tryin to compare but I can't find good enough pics. even a simple cam swap tutorial with detailed pics or somethin would help.
Allencr that's actually a good point about the sediment build up.

Barrington - just so your not alone, I checked my spare head and found that the head has these tubes fitted too. Not sure if they are fitted to my race head though.

Im sure ive seen head with and without them. Just leave it alone. Id say its an update to retain oil in the head. If it doesnt hav it to start with then dont f##k with it. It will just create problems if u start fiddling.
