It's not a 350 chev, check your valve clearances

    ^^ What dneg said.

The valve lifter/bucket is mechanical. (changing oil wont do much)

the buckets with shims, directly actuate valves by the cam.

Common for the valve clearances to be out and cause ticking.

The shims probably just need adjusting.

Pretty sure there was a guide on lextreme.com

I had this issue with not only mine but another couple of 1UZs inc one we put "Cams with great big hairy nuts" into. In each case the Tappet clearances were within spec (they run a "Shim and Bucket type tappet" rather than a lifter as such). In each case and there were 3 cars (My Surf with UZZ31 engine, A UCF11 Celsior which got the cams and an aus delivered LS400) each one got fitted with "Green top" injectors further down the track, now when the injectors were fitted they were serviced prior to fitment and what do you know? "Tappet noise" went away (as did a problem with pinging under load and flat spotting). This might sound dumb but put two bottles of injector cleaner thru each of your next tanks of fuel. Nulon stuff is the best. then report back

Don't listen to your exhaust person about anything other then exhaust!
Listen to the injectors with a piece of hose, any noise from them will be very apparent.

Agree with above, and I usually go for the cheapest or easiest solution first so I would run some injector cleaner through - can't hurt even if that isn't the problem. Changing the oil weight would only mask not fix the problem if valve clearances are out. Here is a link to the tutorial on doing valve clearances on lextreme http://www.lextreme.com/valve_clearance.html

The 1UZ have valve adjusting shims. If there is need for adjustment in 300 000 km hmmm.. there should not!
It's like 3S-FE;never need anything but oil change!

Matter of fact;1UZ lifters are aluminium and have some weird coating on them.Sprayed iron or what?

Is it a tapping or more of a clicking? If its a clicking, have you tried new exhaust manifold gaskets?
