Edit: Or do I look into a single-piece tailshaft? I think I will still need some pieces though that I dont have.
Hey guys,
I'm not really knowledgeable on tailshafts, gearboxes, housings, yokes, etc etc so I've been trying to figure out via search and see what I can do. Here's my problem...
Have a conversion going into: '82 MZ11 Soarer
The half-cut used: 1JZ-GE VVTi from a 1997 Chaser JZX100 [VIN: JZX100-0002977]
What I didnt get: Anything literally after the gearbox - so no tailshaft which is my problem
To my understanding: If I acquire a JZX100 non-turbo tailshaft, it will bolt up, and then a new middle-part of the tailshaft will be made up to the right length to suit the back of my MZ11 pieces... Is that right? As said I'm not good on this kind of thing so really just learning from searches & information pages of A340x's. Or is there any other local options that I may have. I have read that SC300/400 may use a A340x that is very similiar but not sure.
So far I have learnt that non-turbo and turbo automatic gearboxes are different, with diff sizes torque converters, diff mechanical/electronic sensors, some with ABS, and different bolt patterns to even fit them to the gearbox. I am posting this on JZX100 forums to try get some help too. Im a bit boggled so thought Id ask, all this electronic type/kick down types/etc is too much to figure right now but I'm still searching on the web to see answers. Thanks guys.

I'm assuming your new gearbox has a slip yoke?
If so, just use your stock one, and get the yoke replaced to suit the new box (will be larger) and get it lengthened/shortened to suit.
You can choose to get all new uni's and a new centre bearing at the same time you want.

I think it takes a slip yoke, but it didnt have it included. And my MZ11 didn't use a slip yoke - there was nothing interchangeable between my old A340xx and this JZX100 97+ A340x.
I picked up a 20 spline A340x slip yoke today which may be of use.
Good idea on replacing the uni joints and center bearing.
This advice I got from someone else as well: "all you will need is the front yoke out of the trans the centre bearing and rear diff yoke and get a custom one made up"
I believe what I have is the front yoke, the rear diff yoke should be the stock Z11 one, and then the in between bits will be custom with a new u-joint & centre bearing.. If i have understood correctly
Thank you CrUZ. And I shall report back for the sake of future reference, when some other poor soul does a xZ1x auto JZ conversion.

Don't get a custom single piece, even if people try to tell you its better, its not.
Reuse the rear half of yours (get the uni's replaced if you like), and modify your front half with the new yoke.
A modification and rebalance will be about $200
It can cost up to $500 extra to get new uni's and centre bearing because of the labour involved in removing the original ones. But talk to your driveshaft shop about this.
They'll also tell you how to measure it up so they know what size to make it.

Sure thing, really appreciate the advice and rough prices. Thankfully it sounds like it's not exorbitant! Here's to hoping the new yoke is all goodWill see how that goes Monday arvo.
I've been told mixed things but once I read about high RPM risk to damaging/breaking a 1-pc tailshaft I definitely wont bother, especially as they are 2-pc stock so why change whats from factory in this regards.
Thanks again, much love, and I've you repped too much it wont let me ATM. Will keep progress noted later this week

Any tailshaft is good if it's dynamically balanced, and U-joints working angles are equal. 2-piece parts would have higher resonance, which is good, but they are harder to align for proper angles. It's important to understand that without the angles being equal to each other, you will get vibration no matter the shaft is balanced or not.

Engine conversion is when you drive a shitbox which costs a whole LEXUS to own
Thanks for that note George
So my 20 spline count one was too small. Thought why havent I tried TOYODIY yet - but I'm not sure what the part # is for just the yoke itself. Ah well... http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_J_199...TPQF_3701.html
I have since found out that MX83 / MZ20 / MA70 and R154 use the same slip yoke.
I think 90s Soarers used the 3 prong bolt on type, and possibly the 90s Supra in that case too.
