Default Indicator won't flash - SOLVED

My passenger side indicator is pooh!

When you turn on to indicate the light/indicator clicks on but will not flash. The right indicator works fine and so does the hazards.

I have tested each light to find if one was at fault, by unplugging each one and testing to see if the indicators work, and then systematically plugging each one in and re-checking. I have checked and no wires are loose or worn.

So, could this (despite the drivers side indicators working fine) still be a problem with the flasher relay, or something else; the indicator stalk etc.

    Thanks

    Hi,

If it's clicking then I assume the stalk switch is okay, as it's sending power to the relay unit. Could be the relay unit that's the issue, and being mechanical they do stuff up on the odd occasion, but easily fixable.

Here's a thread for fixing the bokka in an old Celica, so not sure if yours is the same or similar....

Hey River, thanks for the link.

I originally thought it might be the Bokka, but the drivers side and hazards are working fine. According to my wiring knowledge the left and right indicators use the same two wires so if it was broken/worn both sides wouldn't work.

I thought the stalk would be ok, and it might be an earthing problem, but connecting each light (and therefore each individual earth point) shows that it's not working correctly somewhere before the earth point.

if you have a old type flasher unit, they need a certain amount of load to work ie all globes must be ok... have you walked around the car with the left side on... what happens ...do all lights function but not blink.. the newer type of electronic flasher units will work with only a small load.

And are the correct wattage globes installed?

Indicator circuits are set up to operate incorrectly when only one of the globes is faulty. eg flash too quickly if one is blown.

And where do the indicators earth via?

From my limited understanding, the flasher unit is installed somewhere between the power and the indicator stalk, which is in parallel to the hazard switch, so that the flasher works, but the stalk/hazard switch direct where the current goes.
Sounds like you may have more of an issue with the stalk because only 1 side is a problem.

I've done some diagnostic investigation which has left me even more confused.

I have swapped the wires around on the stalk to test if the switch was at fault. Despite the wires being switched it is still the passenger side that is failing to flash. Stalk ok. As the driver side, and hazards are flashing ok I can rule out the bokka being at fault. I've walked around the car and all globes are operating, plus the passenger side will flash when the hazards are activated, so there is not a grounding problem. Both indicator lights on the dash work, so that's not the problem either. So as far as I can see it muct be a faulty wire or some sort between the stalk and where the wires intersect with the hazard wires.

still think it is the bokka unit...drivers side enough load to flash...hazards enough load to flash.... pass side not enough ..maybe check the wattage of the globes on the pass side. if it is the original bokka unit...it is getting old !!!! repco + $20 = electronic flasher unit. the old one relies on enough heat to bend a bimetalic strip..when it bends the lights go off...when it cools down they come back on, that is why it is important to have enough load.
maybe try adding a light to the circuit some where.

    And the winner is..... Lightbulb!

Some idiot grabbed the 5W globe not the 21W globe out of my electrical parts box. I can wire up a Haltech E8 but I can replace a lightbulb.

Installed the correct one and it works great. At least having checked every other component of the circuit I know everything is in good health.

Thanks for all the replies and assistance.
