Thanks Hen, thats worth a look. Ill go and check with the mech on Monday. I thought that mushroom thing was the fuel reg? or am i looking at the wrong part? Hopefully I have the map by then too.
I know you've said that fuel flow and pressure is fine. But I've heard of a similar situation where the pulsation damper (the big mushroom thing on the inlet to the fuel rail) had died and was causing the problems. On my engine I removed this and just whacked a 90degree fitting in there (required an adapter from Pirtek).
Before you do anything too expensive, find the diagnostics wire out of the ECU and reset/check for error codes.
I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.

Sorry I could have beem clearer... from factory, there is a mushroom thing on each end of the 4AGZE fuel rail. One is the fuel pressure reg (has a vacuum signal going to it and sits on the cyl 1 end of the rail) and the other (no vacuum line and sits on the cyl 4 end of the rail) is the pulsation damper.
Pulsation damper can be removed. Though it's not something that fails regularly.

Good news....Hen, you were right...it was the pulsation damper and there was rust in the fuel rail. Now the car runs real smooth right thru the rev range. I havent seen it as yet but I pick it up tomorrow to drive it home so Ill give it a bit of a test then :-)
Thanks to all who have offered suggestions to this problem. Just goes to show there are a multitude of little things that can go wrong.
Cheers all
David
