    Default AE82 - 4AGE 16v Bigport/7ribs rebuild help

Guys im planing to rebuild engine but im going to be buying part by part because i dont work already all the time because im in the university, so for example when i get money ill buy the pistons and storage them, then again with money buy the full gasket set, etc.... that way..

So i ask if its better that way, or its better to buy the bulk? i mean the rebuild kits???

i have most if the tools i just dont have the torque wrench but i will buy it for the rebuild (i dont want to cut heads of the bolts.... ) if you guys can post me a torque specs manual of the engine that would be reagy greeat.!

Can we do like a "what you would need" and a "what you can still use" list???

    1.- Gasket set
2.- Pistons & rings set with pins

firstly, usually if you are buying alot of items from the 1 shop usually you will get a better price..

1- gasket set (all the torque settings you need will usually come with this, at minimum the head specs will)
    2- piston, rings and pins
    3- main bearings
    4- big end bearings
    5- new cylinder head bolts
6- thrust bearings for the crankshaft
7- plastiguage (you will need this to double check bearing clearences, its very cheap, like $20)

last time i rebuild a 4age i tensioned to the following

1- head studs were ARP brand, so they were 80ft pound i think, standard replacement will be alot lower than this
    2- mains 60nm
    3- big ends 40nm
4- check the big end and main bearing clearences are within 1.5 and 2thou with the plastiguage
5- ring gap should be around the 16 to 18thou, but these should be ok straight out of the box
6- end float of the crankshaft should be around 4thou, checked with feeler gauge

any other information, id recommend buying a workshop manual, for that engine they should be easily available and very cheap, thanks

I don't buy my stuff on the net so i wouldn't know who's the cheapest online, valve stem seals will come in the gasket kit, and the valves only need changing if there pitted, otherwise you can buff and clean them with a wire wheel

    Look guys http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-Corol...&forceRpt=true

it says it fits all 4ages engines, it would fit my ae82 with 7rib block? im new on sizes and those stuffs, and im confused about the 3-7rib blocks some say are same the internals, some say not... etc with the heads too... i have a big port (t-vis plated)

if it fits i would have left the head bolts, and the thrust bearings and washers are the same?

guys about the internals like rod bearing and main bearings, pistons & head bolts would any item from 1986 till 1989 with 4age engine fit?

what special tools do i need? i know about the Torque wrench, Thickness gauge (the metal blade ones), the Valve lock keeper intaller & remover and the piston compressing tool, is there any other special tool?

Hi well just waiting for the parts to get home, and im planning to use Full syntetic oil (high mileage) what you recomend guys? im using normal oil 25w-50 because its pretty damn hot in here but dont know if changing to syntetic needs to drop the grade of the oil, also i have read that when its freshly rebuild needs to change the oil at 50k KMs or miles at least

25w-50 is for an old worn engine.
'50KMs or miles' where are you reading this stuff??
    Oil doesn't wear out.
Change if OLD & worn out its additives, contaminated or when going from 10-15 break/run in to whatever you wanna normally go with.

You have to really go out of your way to get the wrong oil. Do not get synthetic or gear or ATF or thick or multi-grade, bulk, re-refined lubes, that's it.

For the running in, use a full mineral based oil, or a run in oil if you can find some (It just doesn't have the friction modifiers added etc). Drive it reasonably hard for 1000kms, do an oil change with the same type of oil. Repeat for another 1000kms and then swap to your synthetic or whatever oil of choice. Run in done.

ooooh learned a bit more, thx for that info Terra, so the first oil when freshly rebuild needs to be a mineral oil, better if its full mineal, and about the grades? wich one you recomend?

in the manual of 4A-GE says the recommended viscosity (sae) temperature range, goes like this in Cºs
    -29º 5W-30
    -18º 10W-30
    -10º 15W-40
    16º 20W-40 or 10w-40
    27º 20w-50 or 10w-50
    38º 10w-50 or 20w-50

where i live when its hot we get from 35ºC to almost 60º so with the table i think the best for the car its the 10 or 20w - 50 or what you guys think? also what brand you guys use or recomend more, ive always used Valvoline (well when i got the car till now) and when changins to synthetic it will be the same grade of oil, rly?
